THE FAMED APOLOGIST CRITIQUES SCHONFIELD'S INFAMOUS BOOK

Clifford A. Wilson is an Australian Christian researcher and writer (his Ph.D. is in Educational Psychology), who also served in Israel with the American Schools of Oriental Research. His main interests are archaeology and apologetics, and he has written some of the most devastating critiques of Erich von Daniken (author of numerous books such as Chariots of the Gods); see, for example Wilson's Crash Go the Chariots, The Chariots Still Crash and War Of The Chariots, in which he holds a public debate with Von Daniken. He also wrote books such as Rocks, Relics, and Biblical Reliability, Monkeys Will Never Talk or Will They?, etc.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1977 book, "This book is an answer to Dr. Hugh J. Schonfield's best-seller The Passover Plot, a work that has had an amazing acceptance and is now the basis of a film... [Wilson's book] demonstrates that Dr. Schonfield's thesis is unacceptable and unjustified. His reconstructions show an imagination quite removed from the New Testament's own teaching concerning the Man Who died by crucifixion, then rose from the dead and changed the world."

He states, "Dr. Schonfield's logic seems to fall down in his consideration of the provision Jesus made for His mother from the cross... If this was such a skillfully contrived plot, as Schonfield claims, surely Jesus would have made arrangements for His mother much earlier than this?" (Pg. 90) After noting Schonfield's claim that there was not a "close bond" between Jesus and his mother, Wilson states, "This not borne out by the facts. When Jesus used the word 'woman' to His mother at the incident of the turning of water into wine [Jn 2:4], this was a term of respect. It does not have the cold overtones that appear in the translation into English." (Pg. 130)

He acknowledges, "There is some truth in Dr. Schonfield's argument that there are legends about great men being born of virgins and having heavenly origins. In ancient, classical, and more recent times, other so-called great men have either claimed for themselves, or their followers have claimed for them, a virgin birth and divine origin. The fact of such claims in no way detracts from the genuineness of the divine birth of Jesus Christ." (Pg. 106)

He concludes, "The evidence is convincing, and ... the New Testament ... does not perpetrate a Passover PLOT. Rather it presents a Passover PLAN, fulfilled in all its details in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Christ." (Pg. 218)

A must for pig ownership.

Today most children and some adults believe pork comes from the grocery store. Van Loon starts with the history of swine to give the reader an understanding of the animal from the ground up. I wasn't sure if I could or wanted to raise pigs, so I bought the book. By the time I finished it I couldn't wait to go get some. Nutrition is so important to raising your own meat, and Van Loon spends a lot of time describing what the impact of certain foods are on the end-product. This helped me make the descisions on what our own pigs would eat. When we took our first pig to the processing plant, they were very impressed by the quality of the meat and we were impressed by the flavor. When we took the second one, it somehow,(150 lbs of pork),was 'mis-placed'- I never got it, hmmm....I think the book was mostly to blame.

This book has a lot of helpful information and illustrations. We had our first litter with the help of this book! I'm sure glad I had it to reference when I needed it. A great investment for anyone starting to raise pigs.

Good book. Dated.

This is a good introduction to pigs and pig raising. There is some good information to glean, but overall the material is a bit dated for current homesteading practices that are focused on pastured pork.

Captivating Humour and Insight into an Amazing Country he Knows so Well

Anyone who has any experience with Greece, or for that matter even those with none, will find Matt's way of telling stories totally delightful. He has that rare gift of writing without pretences, sounding like he is just reminiscing and talking to a friend. Actually like talking to a friend while having an ouzo, which affords that occasional philosophical musing and intuition as to the deeper meanings of a given situation. He has a neat and dry sense of humour, and I have enjoyed his memoires of life in Greece like a modern day Henry Miller.

I first discovered his writings on his website http://greecetravel.com, where I found myself lost in story after story. His only fault perhaps is that you quickly forget what exact boat schedule you were looking for as you travel down his long and colourful memories of life and travel in all parts of Greece.

Great summer read!

An irresistible combination of travel stories, every-man philosophy and comedy make this book a great read. Often laugh out loud funny, Matt's wry outlook on life will engage the reader from the first chapter to the last. To sum it up, this book won't teach you the secrets of spearfishing but after reading it, you will feel you've have gained a new friend!

An often laugh-out-loud recounting of the author's adventures and relationship with Greece over the years. I enjoyed the unpretentious, honest and insightful telling of his personal stories of Greece that made me feel I was listening to a great storyteller of the oral tradition.

Food writer Dunlop is better known in the U.K., where her comprehensive volumes on Sichuanese and Hunanese cuisine carved out her niche and eventually became contemporary classics. Turning to personal narrative through the backstory and consequences of her fascination with China, she produces an autobiographical food-and-travel classic of a narrowly focused but rarefied order. Dunlop's initial 1992 trip to Sichuan proved so enthralling that she later obtained a year's residential study scholarship in the provincial capital, Chengdu. There, her enrollment in the local Institute of Higher Cuisine, a professional chef's program, created a cultural exchange program of a specialized kind. The research for and success of her resulting cookbooks permitted Dunlop to return to China in a more experienced role as chef and writer; that led to this reflective memoir, which probes into the author's search for kitchens in the Forbidden City as well as the people and places of remote West China. One key to this supple and affectionate book is its time frame: by arriving in China in the middle of vast economic upheavals, Dunlop explored and experienced the country and its culture as it was transforming into a postcommunist communism. I love it!

I loved this book from the get-go. Fuschia Dunlop is erudite, adventurous, well-read and open and her intelligence sparkles in this memoir. It is years since I added to my overburdened cooking library but this is a gem that I will treasure and which has sent me off to examine in detail many previously unexplored sections of the chinese supermarket. She is an evocative writer and the contexts and stories she relates add greatly to the dishes.
For those that are cooks - I should add that a Chinese friend hand-carried some Sichuan Peppers from China which are so explosively different from the ones I purchased from chinese stores in Australia, US and Germany. To put it in context, crunching a single raw pepper of the authentic version is enough to leave the lips and tongue anaesthetised and tingling for 15 minutes. It is really worth to experiment with different peppers to look for ones with a kick.

Excellent culinary memoir

First off I should say that I love eating in China. In fact, that is what I most look forward to when I am heading to China. The variety and quality of the various cuisines in China is truly extraordinary. I really related to this book, not only for the eating adventures, but also because I also was once a young student in China trying to figure things out around me. Dunlop was a young girl studying Chinese in Chengdu when she became distracted by the heady smells and tastes that surrounded her. She enrolled in the local cooking school and dove headfirst into the wonderful world of Chinese cuisine, specifically 川菜 chuāncài, or Sichuan cooking, in her case.

What makes this book so readable, and persuasive, is Dunlop's ability to engage the reader with personal and intimate stories of regular people and homestyle cooking. As a speaker of Chinese she is able to share experiences with ordinary Chinese that would not be possible without a knowledge of the language. For example, she befriends the cook at the local noodle shop and eventually persuades him to give her the recipe for his famous dandan noodles, which she shares with the reader. I know I have said this before in other book reviews, but knowing Chinese really opens up all kinds of doors and allows one to experience a China that would not be possible if you did not know the language.

She correctly states on page 206, "Food has always been of exceptional importance in Chinese culture. It is not only the currency of medicine, but of religion and sacrifice, love and kinship, business relationships, bribery, and even, on occasion, espionage. `To the people, food is heaven,' goes the oft-repeated saying." Though the book focusses on Sichuan cuisine, she does give insight into China's other culinary traditions as well.

The book is engaging, entertaining, and very informative. It is obvious that she has done her homework and knows her stuff. She gets added credibility because she experiences all this first hand while she lived in China and on subsequent trips back after returning to the UK.

The reader comes away from this book fascinated with Chinese food, and really hungry. The food she describes in the real thing. This is a well written memoir and I highly recommend it.

The reader is skillfully seduced into following this well rounded erudite chef/author as she wanders through familiar and unfamiliar foods and landscapes with nary a dull passage or pretentious insight

Linda Seligmann gives us an intriguing ethnography of marketing in Cusco and Lima, and an account of life in contemporary Peru. Her generous use of interview materials and excerpts from her field notes bring the sights, sounds, and flavor of the market to life. Her work demonstrates skill, sensitivity, and wisdom. It is an excellent introduction to Andean studies for economic anthropologists, Latin Americanists, and general readers. It is also an positive answer to N�stor Garc�a Canclini's question, "Can a foreigner study and understand another country?": indeed, one can. This book demonstrates devoted study and understanding.

About the Author
Jason Haber is a serial and social entrepreneur. His extensive career has intersected the worlds of business, politics, academia and technology. In 2010 he co-founded Rubicon Property, a social entrepreneurial real estate firm based in Manhattan. Warburg Realty acquired the company in 2013. He has vast experience in government and public policy. Haber has worked as an advisor for several elected officials and candidates in New York City and in Washington, D.C. Haber was an adjunct professor at John Jay College where he taught a public policy course. He is a board member of Rivet Media, a virtual reality startup. Haber is a frequent commentator on CNBC and Fox Business News and has been covered in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Communication from The George Washington University and a master’s degree from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. Haber currently lives in New York City with his wife and daughter.

According to The Business of Good, new businesses are adding "giving back" into their basic business plans. This adds value to the more traditional way of personal giving by donations or charity events. The idea of building a give-back strategy into any business is labeled as Social Entrepreneurship. Haber gives us an in-depth view of how this business of doing good has evolved and a "how to" map for those who choose this goal.Started by Millenials, it is my personal hope that after reading this relevant and well chronicled account that more companies will adopt this idea.
A must read for anyone who cares about making changes in the current world. Haber writes with personal knowledge about this subject. May we have another "greatest generation" in the upcoming future.
