Danielle Larocca Signorile, an independent executive SAP consultant, has written a handful of books on SAP technologies. Danielle is a featured speaker at many SAP conferences throughout the United States. Her articles have been published in multiple trade magazines, including SAP Professional Journal, SAP Insider, and SAP HR Expert, a publication on which she served as an advisor and columnist for the “Ask the Expert” section. Danielle has also been interviewed for HR Executive Magazine. She earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology and holds certificates and certifications for many areas of SAP, including Human Resources, ABAP Programming, and Basis Technologies. Danielle is an ABAP programmer as well as an expert on SAP query-based reporting and the Human Capital Management module. Useful In Very Specific Situtaions

I was disappointed. The book isn't awful, but the first pages available in the preview are misleading. The book mentions all the types of query tools it covers. However, with the exception of the SAP Query Tool, all other tools are given a cursory look at best. We use the Quickviewer in my work and this book showed me very little new about it. I was able to find better, more complete information on the internet for free.

If you have very specific query uses or may be able to influence what tools your business gives you, then this is a good book. If you're more or less a cog in the machine taking what they give you, then this book is only relevant if what you've got is the SAP Query tool.

Good book - actually all that is available

Not much is written about SAP Query Reporting, so when I saw this book, I bought it right away. It does offer a good overview and some good details as well. There is even some good background information included. However, like another reviewer said, the SAP Query Reporting tool isn't that great but that is no fault of the author.

Well written - a very clear overview of SAP queries

I recently started as an SE ("Solutions Engineer" - otherwise knows as 'demo guy') for a partner of SAP. My experience includes 20 years in the software industry at other companies, but as as this is my first exposure to SAP I looked for some coherent documentation (which IMHO is sadly lacking in most areas of the program).

Ms. Larocca-Signorlile actually writes in a clear and digestible manner - making sense of the processes rather than focusing purely on rote instructions. I only hope she will write documentation for other areas of SAP software, of that other writers will mimic her style.

No More Drama by Lisa Cavallao

Some good advice, for some people, but not for all. You have to realize each child is different, as is the issues, background, methods and lifestyles. There are hundreds of ways to be defiant, as there are reasons. It will only work if the reason behind the drama, is clearly known, and accepted, and understood by all parties.

This book is counter intuitive--if you have a defiant child, how do you make them change that behavior? Well, according to what I'm reading, you don't. The problem of defiance isn't resolved by focusing on or trying to micro manage defiance or other negative behavior. The answer is in correcting your own behaviors. I'm loving this book as I see this more of a leadership book--effective leaders don't spend their time focusing on the wrong things in an org but in setting a vision for success, enabling that vision and trusting on the org to rise up to bold expectations. The premise is that children are good and intelligent and will follow the example set for them--the child learning from their actions is not a function of a parent drilling that into them.

If you have a defiant child and "controlling" their behavior isn't working for you, I strongly recommend Cavallero's approach. I also recommend the book for managers who want to stop mico-managing. This book has a lot to offer in both realms.

MUST READ FOR ALL PARENTS!!

Other readers might think my opinion doesn’t matter here because the author of this book happens to be my mother. But I’m writing this anyway because I believe in the work she does. She takes her job as a Mom very seriously and wants to be the best she can. As she says in the book, in the last eight years, my Mom has totally changed the way she parents and it has made us all a lot happier. Although I’m not very happy about not being mentioned in this book as much as my sister is, I can see how people who want to be happier parents would love reading about how my Mom did it.

GREAT BOOK, VERY EFFECTIVE! :)

The author draws on the remarkably complete records of British government offices concerned with logistics during the Revolutionary War and army service departments such as commissary, quartermaster and barrack-master generals to provide a full account of the everyday life of the British army and an accurate record of how logistical and administrative problems in America affected the course of the war. His study makes it clear that the British army in America depended almost entirely on Britain for supplies, and that for six years inadequate and sometimes corrupt administration seriously affected the course of operations and the morale of the troops. An organization capable of supplying the army was not developed until 1781, too late to change the outcome of the war.

A Very Worthwhile Book

This is a book that any serious student of the Revolutionary War should read. The book is divided into seven major sections. Mr. Bowler starts by describing the British logistical organization, such as it was. He then goes into the problems that that organization and the operational units it supported faced. Exactly how many mouths had to be fed? Conflicting data, poor communications, and the lenghth of time required to send messages back and forth across the Atlantic were vexing to all concerned. The London authorities did not seem to realize how much wastage occurred due to poor food quality, poor packaging, the uncertainties of sea travel in the age of sail, poor storage in the colonies, and further losses ashore in getting the landed supplies to where the troops actually were.

The second section is entitled "America as a Source of Supply" and the short answer is that it was not. The population was much more disaffected than the Britiish government believed; assured supply was only possible from areas under the British army's direct control.

The third section is "Britain as a Source of Supply" or, as subtitled, "The Problem of Food." I, for one had not realized how close the British were to being unable to feed their army in 1779. They scraped by but had difficulty throughout the war in amassing the reserves necessary to support campaigns away from coastal ports. Bowler states that for the seventy-nine months of conflict (Lexington-Yorktown) the army had the desired six months reserve it thought necessary for only twenty-three of those months.

The fourth section deals with Britain as a source of supply for all the necessities other than food. These ran the gamut from candles to horses and the fodder for same. The losses of horses at sea were horrendous and those that arrived needed months to recuperate. Once unloaded there were always problems in arranging land and water transport to final destinations.

The fifth section deals with the malfeasance that occurred within the supply organization. This section could have been shortened and still made its point that these "gaming the system" activities increased the overall cost of the war, lessened efficiency, and provided incentives to supply inferior products at quality prices.

The sixth section deals with the "Northern War" because Canada was handled separately from the colonies. It includes an incisive analysis of the poor logistical planning for Burgoyne's campaign in 1777.

The final conclusions section is excellent and sums up the changing British strategies during the course of the war and the pervasive influence of supply matters. It is worth having the book just for this last section.

There are page reference notes and a complete bibliography for those wanting to dig further into this interesting study.

Logistics and the Failure of the British Army in America 1775-1783 by R. Arthur Bowler. 290 pages. 1975

Found this book in a local library while I was doing research for a Staff Ride at the Paoli Battlefield. A former co-worker had read it several years ago and highly recommended it.

The book is shorter in length than I expected given that "To Starve the Army at Pleasure: Continental Army Administration and American Political Culture, 1775-1783" is 321 pages and "Supplying Washington's Army" is 492 pages. The writing in parts is swift moving and in other parts it bogs done into minutia. The later especially occurs in the chapter on war profiteering. An important subject but perhaps best left in this detail to a separate book.

The first couple of chapters and the chapter on the Northern Campaigns and Canada proved excellent in balancing readability and detail. The structure and numbers involved in the British logistics effort are stunning and when probed too deeply the reader can get lost. It is remarkable that so much of this data survives in usable form. While the author in the conclusion states that you can not solely lay the failure of the British to triumph in the American Revolution on the altar of logistics, he does make a great case for how significant a role it did play in the outcome.

What becomes clearer with this text then with other standard or generalized books on the American Revolution is how much influence the logistics situation had on British operations and plans. It also validates that amateurs and popular historians study tactics and biographies while professionals study logistics. Much of the maligned movements or lack of movement of British forces in the war are too often attributed to poor generalship or other myths. A little deeper investigation and the logistics situation can generally account for a lot of what happened and why and how it happened.

The scope of the British logistics effort was amazing. The majority of military supplies, food stuff, fodder, and equipment issued to the armies was supplied from across the Atlantic Ocean. This explains the lack of deep maneuver away from the ocean and the rivers by the British. Locally they harvested firewood, though rarely with out escort and loss. The British operated breweries in New York City, spruce beer proved a prophylactic for scurvy.

The battle for provisions both locally collected and transported proved a constant drain on British manpower. Not only did having to provide escorts and fight off attacks waste and fatigue manpower but I also seasoned American troops and boasted their self-confidence. The notion of transport also proved sticky as there were competing theories about owning the transport versus contracting the transport. None the less supplies are only worthwhile if they are in the right place at the right time and in the right condition which in the 18th century was not always easy. Salt and salt-rations were the normal preservative and preserved type of rations. This placed salt at a premium for all sides.

The biggest eye opener for me though was the effect of the Sullivan Campaign of 1779 on the rationing situation of British forces that winter and into the next year. It hampered British operations across the theater and conflict and could have proved even more disastrous across the spectrum then it was. Attacking an enemy through his economy and logistics rather than through direct combat is akin to the modern police theory of; if you follow the drugs you will catch drug users, dealers, and suppliers. If you follow the money you get the kingpins.

A good book for most readers though not the entire book. The chapter on war profiteering is drudgery.

I loved this book! I actually ordered it several months ago and read it in one day. I could NOT put the book down. It is packed with so much information related to how to do just about everything with you own natural hair. I wish I had this book when I first became natural, it would not have taken me so long to embrace my own natural hair and appreciate it. She has definitely gotten to the root of natural hair and this book will give you an appreciation for your hair and how to handle it. Great and fast read!!

What a great book for all ages.

This was an amazing story on so many levels. On the surface it is a funny, exciting entertaining book for kids. On a deeper level it has some great examples of being prepared and how fun it is to be able to pull something out when needed. On an even deeper level it is an amazing commentary on our current economy. As an adult I found it really entertaining how all three of these threads were interlaced throughout the book. The kids in my life really enjoyed it too and found Permiella (the aquirrel) especially charming. I can't wait for the next books to come out.

Never Popping Gum? Why not--what could happen?

How does one create a top-notch chapter book for young readers? To capture the heart and mind of a young reader, an author and illustrator must tap into the emotions of the story’s characters and splash them across the pages of the book in a bold manner. In The Land without Color by Benjamin Ellefson and Kevin Cannon, those emotions encompass the entire rainbow. From the excitement of bright yellow, to the serenity of powder blue, to the anger and frustration of hot red, to the destructive envy of green, this book transports the reader on an energetic journey in an unfamiliar land.

Experienced through the eyes and ears of a 12-year-old kid named Alvin, The Land without Color includes everything imaginable for a medieval-themed mystery. Serendipity lands Alvin in kingdom where strange is the norm and nothing is as it appears to be. Villains turn out to be misunderstood and benevolent creatures. Allies are enemies in disguise. Greed drives characters to evolve in very unflattering ways.
As the story unfolds, Ellefson’s carefully crafted words reveal details to the reader at the same time that Alvin comes to his own ah-ha moments. The pacing is perfect! The story is also written a show-not-tell fashion—ideal for young readers. For example, Alvin becomes tired from all of his dragon fighting and goblin hunting. Nothing, not even a delicious ice cream sundae, can give him the energy he needs to save the kingdom and rescue the princesses. Eventually, Alvin learns a valuable lesson and shares this revelation with the reader.

Ellefson also employs a clever tactic to keep the readers on their toes as they solve the mystery of the colorless land. Haven’t I seen a sand-swept lion in a white desert before? But where? I remember some characters skipping through a field with flowers that didn’t go well. But where? Ellefson reminds readers that something isn’t quite right. However, he encourages readers to put the pieces together on their own.

By the end of the story Alvin discovers the value of patience, the importance of loyalty and friendship, and the usefulness of reasoning skills—how would you exit a maze of endless tubes in the shortest amount of time?

Join Alvin and his friends in putting the pieces together to solve the mystery and bring color back to the kingdom. As you read, instead of reaching for a bowl full of jelly beans to snack upon, munch on a rainbow of healthy food instead. When you finish this book, you’ll understand why.

I highly recommend The Land without Color for children ages 6 to 10. It’s a great chapter book for a read-along story at bedtime for the younger kids and perfect for older children to savor on their own. Whatever the audience—think twice before accepting that piece of Never Popping Gum! ;-)

The Land without Color

This book was magical for me. I loved it! I don't not ever want to be without color. But I enjoyed going this adventure with this author in this book. So many unexpected friends, this was a fun read for me. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
