So much Fun

This is a wonderful, entertaining book. I ended up reading sections out loud to my husband as I was laughing so hard. Although I didn't grow up in the neighborhood or specific culture Aylward describes, the characters are familiar, only drawn bolder, brighter than those who inhabited my coming of age years. When you need a pick-me-up, go for this one. You'll be passing it on to friends for sure.

HILARIOUS!

A friend gave me this book and I enjoyed it from start to finish, often reading sections out loud to my husband so we could both laugh out loud! The narrator, Glint Wayward, is a psychologist. As he sees his patients, he is reminded of his own youth and flashbacks to his younger days. This structure works well as it allows the reader to see Glint as both boy and adult and understand how each portion of his life feeds the other. The author knows how to craft a funny, anecdotal story. The characters bounce off the page and each has such a strong personality, even the minor characters. There is a warmth underneath all the hilarity that comes through but not in a sappy, sentimental way. The reader is welcomed into this wacky North Jersey neighborhood, invited to witness all the shenanigans as if he also lived on the block.

Highly recommend this book, not just for boomers, but for anyone who needs a good laugh!

A Very Funny and Entertaining Read!

Glen Aylward nailed it with this witty and entertaining story that everybody can relate to. While psychologist Glint Wayward reflects about his life and childhood, he takes the reader on a hilarious nostalgic tour of northern New Jersey. Although very humorous, the vibrant characters and their heartfelt stories make this book a must read. I would highly recommend it.

Not a very good "textbook"

The "Notes & Questions" are not very helpful. The author should have thought about his audience more (law students). The author poses questions about topics in early chapters of the book, when those topics haven't even been taught yet (hide the ball). To make it worse, the author doesn't answer the questions posed in the relevant note. The author, instead, provides a link to a case (so be prepared to have your laptop/internet/westlaw handy when reading). Free information available on the Internet provides more value than this scam of a "textbook."

A Mac User and Author Weighs In.

I’m a dedicated MacBook Pro user, a professional author, and have recently downloaded Word 2016 for Mac software. Familiar, but not intimately, with Word 2011 for Mac, I wanted to improve my use of Styles, Navigation, and management of large (up to 200k words) documents in MS Word, which remains the default word processor for manuscripts, essays, and short story submissions. Love your Scrivener, Ulysses, Pages, Google Docs, LibreOffice, or IA Writer (trust me, I’ve stuck a toe in them all), but in the end, you’re going to have to use Microsoft Word. Other programs may come and go, but Word is the global standard, and as such, it’s the file storage default for all those treasured documents that you’ve earned through seat sores and wrist tendonitis. Even changes in a program can “lock” past files (as anyone who suffered through the iWorks Pages version 4 to version 5 “upgrade” can attest). In 20 years, will the other software still be around and supported? Only those still holding Borders and Circuit City gift cards would offer a definitive “yes”.

The description details of this Dan Gookin book, as well as other reviews (none of which, as of Dec 2016, are verified buyers from Amazon) warn “Mac users, you’re out of luck”. It’s written so many times in the reviews, in fact, that it’s suspect of collusion (real reviews, or author’s cousins?). So, what did I do: I bought the book anyhow. Maybe I have rocks in my head. Maybe, on the other hand, I have watched several online videos of tutorials for Word 2016 aimed at Windows users where I had no issue following along with my Mac. Definitely there are some differences in certain aspects, and these are listed by blogger 9To5Mac if you search for the comparisons. Embedded fonts, digital ink, screen clippings, are just a few of the dozen or so things not on Mac versus Windows version, according to the 9To5Mac website. Will I need those? Perhaps, but any loss is a function of the software, not Gookin’s book. And, the small differences between the “look” of the software between Mac and Windows can easily be hunt-and-pecked on the screen for a solution; in a real pinch, an online search for a function will reveal the Mac-specific answer, no doubt. Mac users are well-versed in finding answers for their less ubiquitous computers. For instance, the manual often described going to File>Options to adjust such things as "readability". When attempted on a Mac, there is File, but no Options on the drop-down menu. What to do? Most Mac users already know that Preferences is our "Options"; should that not be known (and I checked this just now), a quick internet search for "Mac file options" pulls up the answer.

In the Introduction, the author states, “This book does not cover Word for the Macintosh. If you see an Apple logo on your computer, I can’t promise anything in this text applies to your computer.” Got it, Chief. It seems that there's a concerted effort to "distance" himself from Mac, as though abdicating all responsibility for the few times that a Mac user finds a difference in the book vs. what is on their Mac. Well, since they're 98% the same, it might be better to be inclusive rather than exclusive. And, since there are so few Mac Word 2016 guides, it might behoove you to—rather than scaring away the owners of 20% of all computers—find the small differences and add a chapter (or a sidebar, as done in other Dummies books) to your otherwise encyclopedic effort detailing the minor Mac differences, and thus sell more books. Too busy or lazy to do it? Just say that it can help Mac users most all of the time, list a few of them, and be encouraging and inclusive.

The textbook is well written, with humor added, and is laid out in the usual wide margins and generous spacing familiar to the Dummies series. Each page is easy to read; each step is smooth to follow. Although the “doorstop” length of the book at nearly 700 pages might seem daunting, once opened, it’s a pleasure to peruse. It reads “smaller”, if that makes sense. Even Gookin instructs the reader to seek the parts necessary for him or her, and to use the book as a reference. Indeed, that is sound advice. I would add that the printed book (rather than e-book, if available) is almost mandatory for a text reference, and Word 2016 for Professionals is a vivid example. Even having owned the book for only a week, using it as a workbook for learning, I have Post-Its stuck to so many important pages, it’s beginning to look like an heirloom book of Psalms.

Specific for the working author, the textbook begins with pertinent everyday usage instructions that are, typically, just beyond what most of us ever take the time to learn: templates, styles, page layouts, tabs, printing tips, etc. Much can be learned from a quick read; I gleaned at least one or two useful “pearls” that I will use in my writing process from each chapter. The author/writer specific areas begin in Part 4, pages 331-414, which discusses author tools and document references. I found the most unique feature of the book to be the sections titled “From Brainstorm to Outline” and “Humongous Documents”. Finally, someone “gets it” for the working author! Both of these subjects have been bug-a-boos for me, personally. It has been labor intensive to cut and paste my individual scenes into a working manuscript (struggling to match Styles, formatting, etc.), and once accomplished, I was always left with a gigantic, unwieldy file; I felt like one of those restaurant waiters who weave through diners’ tables while balancing five dinner plates on a single tray! Dan Gookin’s book makes easy work of the balance, even giving his own input into writing techniques, such as placing individual chapters in separate stored files then compiling to a larger unit (making third-party software, such as Scrivener, an unnecessary “middleman” in the process from your brain to a finished manuscript in MS Word).

Those that long for e-book publishing are not left out; Chapter 22 is all yours. There are also chapters on including images, charts, Excel files, internet hyperlinks, and on and on for those graphics designers making pamphlets, posters, magazine layouts, etc.

In the end, I find this book to be head-and-shoulders above the few others that I have purchased for MS Word (Mac 2011, Windows 2010). Although not a basic Word 2016 book (which, I believe, Dan Gookin has written, too), it’s quite easy reading for anyone that knows even the basics of Word in any version. I love to reference this manual for minor layout and formatting issues. It instructs on troubleshooting, for instance, when unable to open a saved file, or opening a file from another software product and having it “look right” on MS Word. No longer will I need to read the agent and contest submission guidelines with fear—“Oh, Lord, this one wants every page numbered, including my last name, in Helvetica 10-point, except for the title page and footnotes page!”—but instead I’ll feel a sense of “I got this one”. Dan Gookin’s book is an invaluable resource for those working with text professionally, Mac or Windows—and even for those who just want to write a simple letter in Word 2016 for Mac without breaking a sweat.

The Only Tutorial You'll Need For Word 2016

I never comment on the size of a book but in this case I must mention that I’ve been reading the “for dummies” series for many years and this is a tome to be reckoned with. It’s twice as thick as any other volume I have in my reference library and that’s for good reason – it’s filled, packed and stuffed with wide-ranging and practical advice for anyone who uses Microsoft Word 2016 for more than a cursory note to your mom.

The book assumes you have a basic knowledge of Word and is geared towards Word2016 but much can be applied to earlier versions. Of course if you have a Mac, you’re out of luck. The book starts with the usual sundry topics such as fonts, paragraph layouts, tabs, lists, tables but soon progresses to more interesting topics the author calls “Style Methods and Madness”, also “The Tao of Templates”. The whole goal of this book is to go beyond the basics.

The topics include Word for Lawyers; now we’re talking turkey and the book is paying for itself. There’s Tools for Authors and how to deal with Humongous Documents. We’re still only at the halfway point.

There are sections on e-book publishing, web-page publishing, all written in a style that is informative without going in the incomprehensible regions. You can pick and choose the areas that are apropos for your specific needs. For instance I needed help with templates and content control; specifically with Fill-in-the-blank documents. There was the answer to my plea with chapter 27 dedicated to “me”. Of course when you find the areas that you’re needing training in, you will also find yourself skimming other zones in the book and saying “Wow – that will save me a lot of time”.

This is one of the better “for dummies” books in that it is so comprehensive it’s probably the only tutorial you’ll need.

Sometimes, I just wish that software would come with a big fat manual. It's fine to search the web for specific issues; but for general perusing, nothing beats a book. Most of use can use the basic tools in Word. It's the more complex tasks that need teaching. I did find a few useful tips that I've employed in my work already, but I wish the book dealt with more of the problems we sometimes run into. Like yesterday, I kept highlighting a paragraph to see what font it was and it was blank. I chose Times New Roman but it wouldn't take. Individual words showed up as Times New Roman. I cleared formatting for the paragraph but that didn't help. Humph. The answer was not in this book.

On the other hand, "Word 2016 for Professionals" does delve into macros, which interests me. I've never been able to do more than record a macro as I was typing; but the more complex stuff, I could never understand. This isn't going to make you a pro at creating macros, but it will help you get started.

This is a thick book that covers a lot of ground. I'll keep it around as my Word manual; but for difficult issues, I still have to Google. I'd say it's very useful for beginners but not as useful for more seasoned veterans.

About the Author
Janet Gonzalez-Mena started her early childhood career in a cooperative preschool as a parent volunteer back in 1966. She then became a Head Start volunteer and ended up as a teacher in a preschool for Spanish-speaking children and their families in 1970’s. She has also helped open several pilot programs including a therapeutic child care program and a home-based bilingual preschool program. When Magda Gerber came into her life in the mid-1970’s, Janet signed up for an internship with her at the Children’s Health Council in Menlo Park, California. As a result of that experience, later, when she became a child care director, she was able to incorporate much of what she learned into her work and was influential in expanding that program to include an infant center. Training and teaching adults has always been sideline, even when she was working with children and families. She worked as a Head Start trainer and as adjunct faculty in 4 community colleges plus the University of California Santa Cruz credential extension program. She taught for 15 years as full time faculty at Napa Valley College in the Child and Family Studies Program. Since 1991, she has been part of the faculty for WestEd’s Program for Infant-Toddler Caregivers (PITC) Training of Trainer Institutes. Janet has been writing along with teaching for all these years and is author of numerous articles and 13 books related to early childhood, including Foundations of Early Childhood Education; Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers (with co-author Dianne Eyer); and Diversity in Early Care and Education: Honoring Differences (Formerly Multicultural Issues in Child Care). She wrote Dragon Mom about herself as parent to help early childhood professionals alleviate guilt when their parenting doesn't live up to their high standards. Her latest passion is understanding more about the Pikler Institute in Budapest, Hungary, where Magda Gerber came from. It took her 30 years to get there after she first heard of it, but her first trip to it in November of 2003 merely whetted her appetite. She has made two more since and is planning for another one. She is fascinated by the approach and is convinced that this residential nursery is a model for the world. She is continuing to learn more about how this approach can be used to improve infant-toddler care and education programs in the United States. She is also working with a group in Mexico to explore how the approach might fit into their models of residential care for infants and toddlers. Janet has a Master of Arts Degree in Human Development from Pacific Oaks in Pasadena, California.

Tenured Professor of Early Childhood Education / Child Development at Canada College since 1970, Department Coordinator since 1978 (and author of 30 courses within the ECE/CD Department). Dianne has served on various college committees during the last few years including the Articulation Self Study Committee and the Chairperson for the College Council from 2002 to 2004. She received specialized diversity training under Title V in 2002. In the late 1990’s she was a presenter at the Annual Conference of the National Association for the Education of Young Children in Atlanta, GA and Washington D.C. respectively. She is the co-author of Infants, Toddlers and Caregivers, sixth edition, McGraw-Hill, released in 2004. Her community experiences include: Task Force member for the Advancing Careers in Child Development Project (Pacific Oaks College, Pasadena CA); San Mateo County Consortium for Quality Programs; SMC Partnership Council; and membership in SMAEYC. She has been responsible for several grants within the ECE/CD Department including: Foster Care Education, SAFE START/Violence Intervention in ECE (Centers for Disease Control); and the Family Support Program (a PSP and The Council collaboration). She is currently coordinating a grant with First 5 San Mateo County to recruit and retain quality ECE/CD teachers and providers in the field. She is also a Professional Growth Advisor for the Child Development Permit.

It's All About Magda

I'm sure most people will order this book because it is required for a college course, but regardless of the reason you order it - be forewarned. This book is not about infant and toddler development - it's about Magda Gerber (and of course Emmi Pickler and Anna Tardos). Gerber was of course one of the most heavily influential early childhood researchers and educators of our time, but she was not the only one and I don't think RIE is the only method of child rearing that should be taught- particularly to students in any Early Childhood department. I felt cheated by this textbook for only exploring one person's ideas about early childhood development, and I was turned off by its tone. The book is almost laughably judgmental (I shouldn't say almost- I literally laughed multiple times) of other forms of child rearing and ideas about child development and it never questions even one of Gerber's ideas or explores any of the ideas of other important early childhood researchers. I think it is extremely important for early childhood educators to study Gerber, but the authors should be clear that she is the subject of this book, not infant and toddler development.

Really well-written

This is a great book, very well written by (I think) the foremost expert on project management for small business. Sid Kemp also happens to be a superb writer. My experience reading this book (twice) was enjoyable and crystal clear. The writing is personal, and neither dry not 'cutesy.' I found it a pleasure to read and the content invaluable.

Don't let the words "project management" put you off. It's a great introduction to an enormously practical topic. It is hard for me to imagine anyone who wants to run their business better not benefiting from it.

This book has helped me plan my ideas out much more clearer than I was able to before reading this book. Overall I think it is a really good read ,and ideal for someone who is in the planning stages of creating their own business. It breaks down why planning is important. The real reason why it needs to done ,and how to turn those plans into a reality.

Yawn...

With chapters consisting of the Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, CBGB's, the Pistols, and even a chapter devoted to fanzines, you'd suspect this was a great book. Sadly, it is just a big waste of time. The book is the product of eight years of "scholarly research" into the punk rock "style." So we get such important information as: where the style came from, and she points out direct links between the New York underground and the British punk movement. You know, the important elements of punk rock. She continually emphasizes that this aspect of punk was never studied in a "scholarly" way. And upon completion of this book, I understand why. It's boring and stupid.

Printed back in 1988, it reads as though it was a project done by a high school student who had no prior insight into punk rock - and certainly never listened to the music. The primary method of her research was through previously written material in books and magazines. Of the countless sources of invaluable information she accumulated, she must have gained a wealth of information by reading not one, but two books about Boy George.
What wins me over is the comparison she makes of punk to an art form called Dada, which existed between 1916-1922 in France. "Members of the punk movement have often referred to themselves as neo-dada." I know I always do, how `bout you? Not surprisingly, key players from the early days of punk (Johnny Rotten, Malcolm McLaren, Lou Reed, etc.) declined doing interviews with the author.
At one point, she states: "To my knowledge, no sheet music of original Ramones compositions has been published, though the chorus to "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" is decipherable." She then writes out the chorus of the song. She did the same thing with Richard Hell's "Blank Generation." In the same chapter, she explains, "Punk Magazine can be categorized as a fanzine." She illustrates her point by giving us Webster's definition of a fanzine. Brilliant!
In her intro, the author states that the zines that were available (to her) weren't documented in a manner that allows extensive verification. I don't know what kind of extensive verification she was looking for, but for whatever reason, she still wrote a chapter about fanzines. Unfortunately she only had a few issues of a couple different zines to use as reference and base her statements on (a few issues of Punk, a couple Sniffin' Glues, and one Ripped & Torn). With this extensive library at her fingertips, she went on and compared the content of Punk Magazine (issue 1) to that of Sniffin' Glue (issue 3). She compared the number of pages, the amount of staff members each publication had, which one was devoted more to music than humor. I mean, come on, is that really necessary?
She continued aggravating me by stating that: "as we study the fanzines, it's important to remember that not everything the punks say can or should be taken at face value." Why are we studying fanzines!? They are written by fans of the music, because they love the music. And they are read and enjoyed (not studied) by fans of the music, because they love the music too. It's as simple as that.
In her conclusion, I read the first intelligent statement, but quickly realized it was a quote from none other than Lester Bangs. Needless to say, this is the worst book I've ever had the displeasure of reading. I can't even figure out who this could have been directed to - certainly not punks. If you made it this far, congratulations! (MS)

I disagree with the assumption in the other Amazon reviews that Trisha Henry was an uninformed outsider, looking in on punk and getting it all wrong... She's just an academic, fercrissakes, writing for an academic audience!! I'm sure she was just as punk as you are, it's just that when you're writing your graduate thesis (which is what this book originally was) you kinda have to be a bit, um, academic. She does an admirable job translating the anti-authoritarian, pro-artist ethos of punk into scholarly jargon -- the trouble with this book isn't that she didn't know what she was talking about, it's just that hearing it all expalined so clinically is nowhere near as fun as playing a Sex Pistols album at full blast. It's worth checking out, if you want to see how DIY translates into PhD.

A nice introduction; could have been juicier

I read this book almost simultaneously with my reading of "Hidden Order" and "Undercover Economist". I'll state my opinion on this book briefly:

1. This book tells you about the lives of Economists whose theories it talks about. This is good - since you learn much more than just the theories; you get to know much more about the Economists than just the theories they postulated.

2. The chapters progress from simple logic to not-so-simple theories. David Smith has written the text beautifully - it's nice to read and 'digest' this lunch.

3. One negative point - sometimes the storyline moves very slowly. There were many instances where I grew impatient with the reading and flipped pages to see where it all was leading to. The style could have been more concise.

Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. It's written in a lucid style, but probably won't appeal to everyone - particularly not to those who prefer fast readups.

Starts good, but progresses into the complex topics in a convoluted way

The book starts pretty good, explains a lot of basic stuff in simple language. Where things start getting bad is when the author takes a nasty personal attack at some economists he does not like. Delves into the personal lives in uncharacteristic fashion for any economics author.

The other aspect that rubbed me the wrong way is he is not able to explain complex but remarkable stuffs of the 80s and 90s pushed through in simple language. It gets frustrating when convoluted sentences are used to explain it. I stopped reading the book at around page 200.

I just got the book. OH MY GOSH I haven't been this excited about anything in a very long time!! The book is gorgeous, I am so GRATEFUL it is spiral bound (I take my quilting books to Office Depot to switch them to spiral). I've just thumbed through it, but love it already. And I just turned down lunch with friends so I could read it cover to cover during my lunch hour! --Marie Jeffries

I just had to take a minute to say how beautiful the book is! I have been cross-stitching since I was 5 (so, 32 years!), and I have stitched quite a few family portraits for family and friends since Martha Stewart Living published some templates a few years ago. But this book has completely inspired me all over again -- the ideas and variations are amazing. I stitched a family portrait for us in 2011, and I am going to do another one this year using the book. I've had so much fun paging through to find the perfect hairstyles and clothes for my kids. Also, I am a journalist by training (and therefore very picky about the written word), and I am so impressed with the quality of the book. It's been so much fun to see people embracing cross-stitch as a contemporary craft. I am a knitter too, and it seems that craft had its renaissance earlier. Elizabeth Dabczynski-Bean is Founder of Stitch People Lizzy was raised in upstate New York, but has long been native to Utah. A jack-of-all trades, Lizzy majored in Music Business from Brigham Young University, and currently holds jobs in technology, interior design, theater administration, graphic design, and photography, in addition to owning and running Stitch People (of Beanski, LLC.) Lizzy enjoys home improvement projects, performing at various local semi-professional theaters, and volunteering at animal shelters.

I absolutely love this book!

I absolutely love this book! I was on the fence at first about purchasing it due to the price point, but it is definitely worth it. It surpassed my expectations and I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in creating stitch people. Before purchasing this book, I tried to create a cross stitch portrait with what patterns I could find on the internet and it turned out awful! After buying this book I attempted again and with all its helpful hints an numerous combinations of hair styles and clothing options, it turned out fantastic. The book also includes cats and dogs, some accessories and access to newly created patterns e-mailed out by the author (some of my very favorites!).

I LOVE this book

I LOVE this book. I've had it for about 4 months now and I'm still loving it! I'm doing family stitch people for my Christmas presents, and I love picking out each person and making every detail to look just like them. The possibilities are endless! And I love the thoughtfulness of the gift when I'm done. It really gives you an opportunity to give someone a nice, thoughtful gift, which is hard these days. And they still turn out modern and cute with a nice white picture frame. And frankly it's relaxing to sit down and cross stitch. Love it!

This book is great as a how to guide

This book is great as a how to guide. The figures turn out really cute and the instructions on how to customize them are really good.

The only thing that surprised me was the paper the book was printed on. The book was very expensive and I did not expect it to be printed on such thin paper. The pages don't seem like they will be very durable with much use. I would have been happier if it had higher quality - thicker or laminated - pages. If the book is to continue being sold at such a high price, the quality of the pages needs to improve a lot.
