About the Author

Bernard J. Mullin, PhD, is chairman and CEO of the Aspire Group, a leading global management and marketing consulting business focusing on the sport and entertainment industry. He previously served as president and chief executive officer of Atlanta Spirit, LLC, where he was responsible for overseeing all team and business operations for the NBA's Hawks and NHL's Thrashers and management of the world-class Philips Arena.

Mullin has more than 30 years of experience in the sport management industry involving executive positions with professional teams and leagues, where he specializes in start-ups and turnarounds, breaking numerous all-time league ticket sales and attendance records. In addition to his position in Atlanta, Mullin served as the NBA’s senior vice president of marketing and team business operations, president and general manager of the IHL’s Denver Grizzlies, senior vice president of business operations for the Colorado Rockies, and senior vice president of business for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has also acted as the owner’s representative on major design and construction projects, including Coors Field and University of Denver’s award-winning athletic facilities.

Before and during his career in professional sports, Mullin spent several years in intercollegiate athletics and higher education. He served as vice chancellor of athletics for the University of Denver and as professor of sport management at the University of Massachusetts. Mullin holds a PhD in business, an MBA, and an MS in marketing from the University of Kansas, where he coached the varsity soccer program. He holds a BA in business studies from Coventry University in England, where he played soccer semiprofessionally for the Oxford City Football Club.

Stephen Hardy, PhD, was a professor of kinesiology and affiliate professor of history at the University of New Hampshire until his retirement in 2014. In 2003-2004, he served as interim vice provost for undergraduate studies. Hardy has also taught at the University of Massachusetts (where he earned his PhD), the University of Washington, Robert Morris College, and Carnegie Mellon University. Over three decades, he taught courses in sport marketing, athletic administration, and sport history as well as a popular introduction to the sport industry. Besides Sport Marketing, his publications include How Boston Played (1982, 2003) and numerous articles, book chapters, and reviews in academic presses. He is completing a coauthored history of ice hockey. His reviews and opinions have appeared in popular outlets such as the Boston Globe, New York Times, and Sports Business Journal. From 1995 to 1999, he was coeditor of Sport Marketing Quarterly. In 1997, he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. He has won college and university awards for excellence in research and teaching. Hardy has extensive experience in college athletics. He played hockey for Bowdoin College�in the late 1960s and cocaptained the 1969-70 team with his twin brother, Earl. After coaching stints at Vermont Academy and Amherst College, he joined the Eastern College Athletic Conference in 1976, where he served as assistant commissioner and hockey supervisor until 1979. During that time, he supervised collegiate championships in venues such as the Boston Garden and Madison Square Garden, and he worked closely with the NCAA Ice Hockey Committee and its affiliated championships. He served on the board of directors of the America East Athletic Conference from 2000 to 2002. In 2003, he was selected by the Hockey East Association as one of 20 special friends to celebrate the league’s 20th anniversary. At UNH he served as faculty representative to the NCAA and chaired the president’s Athletics Advisory Committee from 1996 to 2011. He is a founder of the Charles E. Holt Archives of American Hockey, which are located at UNH’s Dimond Library. He lives with his wife, Donna, in Durham, New Hampshire.

William A. Sutton, EdD, is the founding director and professor at the sport and entertainment business management graduate program in the management department at the University of South Florida. He is the founder and principal of Bill Sutton & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in strategic marketing and revenue enhancement. Sutton has gained national recognition for his ability to meld practical experience in professional sports with academic analysis and interpretation.

His consulting clients cover a who’s who of professional athletics: the NBA, WNBA, NHL, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, MSG Sports, and New York Mets. Sutton frequently serves as an expert on the sport business industry. His insights and commentary have appeared in USA Today, New York Times, CNBC.com, Washington Times, Fox Business, Orlando Sentinel, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Advertising Age, and Brand Week. On the international front, Sutton is a contributor to the Italian publications Basketball Gigante and FIBA Assist.

Sutton served as vice president of team marketing and business operations for the National Basketball Association. In addition to working at the NBA, Sutton was past president of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), a founding member and past president of the Sport Marketing Association (SMA), president of the Southern Sport Management Association, a special events coordinator for the City of Pittsburgh, a YMCA director, vice president of information services for an international sport marketing firm, and commissioner of the Mid-Ohio Conference. He was inducted into the College of Education Hall of Fame at Oklahoma State University (2003) and as an inaugural member of the Robert Morris University Sport Management Hall of Fame (2006), and received lifetime achievement awards from the Southern Sport Management Association (2012) and the Sport Entertainment & Venues Tomorrow conference at the University of South Carolina. He lives with his wife, Shana, in Tampa and Clearwater Beach, Florida.

Statics and Dynamics were some of my favorite classes when I was in college studying for my BS degree in Mathematics and Engineering. I absolutely love all my books, and haven't been able to let many of them go (even if I haven't looked at them in years), but I believe that out of all the books I still have, this one might be the most handy to refresh my memory of the concepts and theory I was given the chance to absorb while I was studying in college. I think I still look at the world in vectors sometimes and it helps me see what all my studying went for.

Engineering Mechanics - Statics (11th Edition) Hardcover from May 4, 2006 by Russell C. Hibbeler

This is a standard for college courses in Engineering Statics and the earlier edition is the book I used in my studies in the early 70's. If there is a better text for introduction into the physics of engineering science, I am not familiar with it and I have several other texts on this subject. Russell C. Hibbeler has for years presented a study of this subject, that gives students a guide to learn the entire realm of Statics and the forces of energy on stationary objects and a lead in to the study of Dynamics. I recommend it to college age students who will need Engineering Mechanics as Statics for credit and knowledge gain for future instruction.

See if you can get an older version

- conciseness: It doesn't spend pages trying to tell you 'F=0
- example problems: the examples actually show a variety of scenarios, and not just the ones where they practically give you 3 out of the 4 variables in an equation.
- problem sets: good range of difficulty; plenty to practice with
- problem answers: basically 3/4 of all the problems in the book have answers in the back (except for chapter 7. there's a whole bunch with no answers for some reason). Generally if the problem number is divisible by 4, it's not there.
- fundamental problem solutions: partial solutions to all fundamental problems are in the back. Even though they're not explicitly step-by-step, they're not bad. Plus the fundamental problems aren't that hard to begin with.

CONS:
-weird notation and variable names: like for work-energy, Hibbeler uses T for kinetic energy for some reason. .

-The actual principles explained in this edition(you know, the actual statics and dynamics?) haven't changed since the previous edition, or the one before that... or the one before that one. Come to think of it, how much of earth's physics has been drastically altered in the past 3 years? not much, if anything at all. But for some reason publishers are still compelled to push out a new edition every 3 years. Apparently our cranes and structures are in danger of flying into the sky, so now you'll have to buy this super awesome newly improved edition only to find out that it tells you the exact same thing the 12th edition did. But you won't know that until you spent $200 and opened the packaging.

Ranting aside... is it a good book? yeah definitely. It's probably one of the best textbooks I have, and I'll keep it after I graduate and for as long as I'm in the engineering world. But is it necessary to put out a new edition every 2-3 yrs and get professors all excited and force their students to buy it? no. See if you can convince your professor to let you buy an older edition for much much cheaper, especially if s/he uses mastering engineering.

**If your prof doesn't use Mastering Engineering, keep in mind though, that the end-of-section problems in older editions are in a different order, and there are some new problems in here that weren't in previous editions.**

(Then again, you can still buy an older version and just ask somebody with this edition to see if he'll let you take a picture of the exercise sets in his book. Problem solved.)

About the Author
David Shaffer is a professor of psychology, chair of the Social Psychology program, and past chair of the Life-Span Developmental Psychology program at the University of Georgia, where he has taught courses in human development to graduate and undergraduate students for the past 30 years. His many research articles have concerned such topics as altruism, attitudes and persuasion, moral development, sex roles and social behavior, self-disclosure, and social psychology and the law. He has also served as associate editor for the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personality and Social Bulletin, and Journal of Personality. In 1990, Dr. Shaffer received the Josiah Meigs award for Excellence in Instruction, the University of Georgia's highest instructional honor.

As an instructor, I found this to be an excellent text. In particular, I appreciated the repeated incorporation of cross-cultural research. This text answers the call for incorporating diversity across the curriculum. Repeated inclusion of cross-cultural similarities and differences, combined with repeated discussions of the interconnections of multiple variables, helps students move away from a "one-size fits all" approach and egocentric thinking. By the end of the semester, when students were presented with a hypothetical problem scenario to resolve, they quickly outlined a list of additional details they would need to know, offering how each variable (parenting style, ethnicity, location of residence, violence within family, etc.) would alter the "goodness of fit" of their intervention. Also, the author does not shy away from presenting research evidence that is sometimes contradictory or inconclusive, which provides an excellent opportunity for in-class discussions of the reality of research and how, as a field, we address these issues. The only drawback is the amount of information sometimes overwhelmed students, so I found it necessary to focus their reading on certain sections of each chapter - however this can also be viewed as strength, since it allowed me to "customize" my course to some extent.

With the arrival of more white musicians, such as Benny Goodman in the Swing Era, jazz achieved the height of mass popularity. This was quickly followed by the more experimental modern jazz movement, with artists like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie redefining the music and moving beyond entertainment into the realm of "serious" music. This well-researched, extensively annotated volume covers the major trends and personalities that have shaped jazz. Gioia, musician and critic, winner of the ASCAPDeems Taylor Award for The Imperfect Art (not reviewed) takes on a daunting task, tracing the history of jazz from preCivil War New Orleans to the embattled music of today--and does a creditable job of it. Jazz's history has been written by entirely too many mythographers and polemicists. Gioia, mercifully, spares us the myths and polemics. ``The Africanization of American music,'' as he calls it, begins farther back in American history than New Orleans's aptly named Storyville red-light district around the turn of the century; he starts his narrative in the slave market of the city's Congo Square in 1819, and when it comes to Storyville, he offers hard facts to puncture the picturesque racism that finds jazz's roots in the whorehouses of New Orleans. Indeed, one of the great strengths of Gioia's account is the sociohistorical insights it offers, albeit occasionally as throwaway sidelights, such as his observation about drumming as an avatar of regimentation more than of freedom. He is particularly good in explaining how the music was disseminated and shaped by new technologies--the player piano, the phonograph, radio. He is also excellent at drawing a portrait of a musician's style in short brushstrokes. His prose is for the most part fluid and even graceful (although his metaphors do get a bit strained at times, as in his comparison of Don Redman's ``jagged, pointillistic'' arrangement of ``The Whiteman Stomp'' and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle). Although Gioia is much too generous to jazz-rock fusion of the '70s and '80s and probably gives more space than necessary to white dance bands like the Casa Loma orchestra, if you wanted to introduce someone to jazz with a single book, this would be a good choice. Burns Delivers the Pictures, but Giola Gives You the Text

Anyone purportedly writing a "History of Jazz" faces a daunting task: A complex history of interwoven musical strands, the linkages and evolutions (sometimes skipping a generation), the geographic spread to Europe and elsewhere, the eventual fragmentation of jazz into diverse sounds and approaches, and the opinions of knowledgeable, rabid fans.
Ted Giola succeeds magnificently: This is the best single-volume history of jazz I've seen. While not without some minor flaws (see below), this is a comprehensive, generally very well written, and intriguing story of the genesis and development of jazz. It is a compelling story, and Giola writes without mythologizing jazz, or constantly needing to remind us that this is, indeed, art. The giants of jazz-- Armstrong, Ellington, Parker, Holiday, etc. are critiqued rather than lionized.
Giola proceeds through the now familiar African, American, African-American, and European roots of jazz that emanated first from New Orleans. He traces its developmental routes through Chicago and New York, the Armstrong solo evolution, and the diverse "territory bands" such as those of Bennie Moten and Count Basie.
Fortunately, Giola does not limit himself to a strictly chronological narrative. He interrupts the timeline with revealing excursions into topics such as the development of instrumental styles (e.g., piano, trumpet), and jumps ahead to show the impact of early influences on later styles (e.g., Lester Young and bebop). He also pays attention to cultural, technological, and economic context, without letting these subtexts blare over the music. Giola knows music from the "inside" as well as the outside, and his discussions of jazz technique and harmonic and rhythmic innovations are detailed and precise. His deconstruction of various solos and styles is illuminating: Charlie Parker's "Indiana" is a version "where almost every bar features one or more altered tones-an augmented fifth, a major seventh played against a minor chord, a flatted ninth leading to a sharpened ninth...a textbook example of how bop harmonic thinking revolutionized the flow of the melodic line in jazz." Yet Giola is also astute in directing our attention to the "core of simplicity" ...the "monophonic melody statements" in bop.
Giola's critiques of various musicians are generally fair and accurate, and he discusses the famous as well as the overlooked. Every jazz fan, however, will probably find some favorite musician given insufficient coverage, or will disagree with a Giola critique. There's no mention of Carmen McCrae, about half a page on Sarah Vaughan, very little mention of European jazz, not much discussion of Miles Davis' or Basie's later work ("The Atomic Mr. Basie," for example). For my tastes, there is not enough on Mingus' sidemen (other than Eric Dolphy and Rahsaan Roland Kirk) and he describes the Mingus Town Hall Concert as a fiasco. (Organizationally it was a disaster, but musically it succeeded.) Giola's statement that "Mingus was the closest jazz has come to having its own Ezra Pound," is baffling. To a large degree, however, these are editorial (the book is only 395 pages long), as well as critical decisions. Not everyone would agree, as I do, with Giola's dismissive statement that Kenny G. "sold over $20 million of emaciated pseudo-jazz to a devoted audience. A critic cannot and should not please everyone.
Giola commands our respect because of his thorough knowledge of jazz and its web-like variations and influences. He knows his material well, whether it's the origins of jazz or the "Third Stream" and "Free Jazz" movements of relatively recent years. I recommend this book very highly to both musician and non-musician alike, jazz aficionado and novice. You may read the book as an introduction to jazz, or to achieve a greater synthesis of what you already know. It may also serve as a springboard to more narrowly focused jazz writing, such as Rosenthal's "Hard Bop" or Lees' "Meet Me at Jim and Andy's." There is a general index, an index of songs and albums, 15 pages on recommended listening, eight black and white photos, some notes on sources, as well as suggestions for further reading. This book, and perhaps a copy of the "Penguin Guide to Jazz," could easily serve as the core of a jazz lover's bookshelf.

Among my top five of Jazz Books

I have a reasonable library of jazz books (including The Horn by JC Holmes, American Musicians by Whitney Balliett, Reading Jazz by Gottlieb, etc, etc) but my top five are HEAR ME TALKIN' TO YA by Hentoff and Shapiro; FOUR LIVES IN THE BEBOP BUSINESS by A.B. Fantastic Survey of Jazz

Is there any other book that is as true as this book, when recalling the intricate history of jazz? If there is, it has escaped my eyes and i invite the opurtunity to read it. Ted Gioia is not only articulate in his representation of jazz history, but his facts are documented well above reproach. He even includes a suggested listening section at the back of the book. Incredible book! I am using it as an aid in teaching my highschool class the history of jazz. This book is a necessary investment for any jazz afficianado.

Boxes are formatted Horizontally, not Vertically

There are 3 main issues I have with this product. The first, being that the cover of the book would lead you to believe that the paper inside was formatted similarly. It is not. The cover indicates vertical boxes, but the actual paper has the boxes horizontal on the page. Additionally, the pages are not perforated for removal. I thought this was a notebook (as listed) but instead, it is just a book. The pages are not intended to be removed, which makes using the back side of the paper difficult due to the spine. Finally, the cover really bothers me due to the blurring of the Japanese Characters which stand out in stark contrast to the properly printed title of the Notebook. It looks as though the image used for the top portion of the cover was very small, and it was stretched many times its original size to fit. The blurriness of the characters and crisp font on the bottom part of the book actually make my eyes hurt to look at.

I will use this notebook, and flip the book itself horizontally to practice, but I will certainly not repurchase this item, and I do not recommend it to others, mostly due to the orientation of the paper inside being different from the orientation on the cover. I understand it is in poor taste to judge a book by its cover, but since we cannot look inside the Notebook before buying, we kind of have to go by the cover and description, both of which are either misleading or vague. I wish I did not purchase this product, and I hope that my Review pictures will help potential buyers get a better feel for what they are purchasing before they commit to buying.

-- I have included pictures of the cover, to try to convey the blurry jpeg look of the images used in comparison with the bottom portion of the cover which is much crisper. I have also included a picture of the opened Notebook so you can see exactly how the interior pages look, and finally, a picture with the ruler to show the size of the boxes (because that's something I would've liked to have seen too!) --

Neat Japanese style notebook.

I thought I would use this to practice kanji, but decided it is perfect as a simple Japanese diary, to help practice writing down my daily thoughts in Japanese, while also learning to write top-down, right-left. I recommend this for beginners and intermediate students, or if you're teaching yourself. And at the price, it's a very reasonable value.

A must have for beginners!

This paper is excellent! I'm in my first semester of Japanese and this has been a life saver, I take almost all my notes in it and its great to use and has enough space between the columns and in the margins for me to write in English. Its great to get the character size consistant, I'm one of the few kids in the class that can keep their characters the same size because I practice on this paper. It bends easily but keeps its shape well. Nice crisp lines.

I tested the water to make sure it wasn't too hot, “OK Jason, bath's ready, in we go,” I lifted him up and he climbed in to the tub and sat down. He immediately started to splash around, water was going everywhere. I figured it would be a good time to take my hoody off so it didn't get too wet. Jason sat in the bath and fixed the taps with his wrench and hammer, whilst I sat back a bit watching him play. It was a good thing that I'd taken my hoody off since his splashing had pretty much soaked the singlet that I was wearing. The white singlet was now pretty much see through, looking at myself in the mirror, it was easy to see the lacy pattern of my bra, although Jason paid it no attention at all.

I grabbed one of the towels, folded it up and put in on the floor next to the tub so I could kneel down. I cupped my hands together and scooped up some water and poured it through his thinning hair, once it was all wet, I took a small amount of shampoo and gently washed his hair. Jason sat there the entire time splashing away with the rattle or one of his tools. I rinsed the suds out of his hair and then took the soap and lathered his body up, I hadn't realised that he was ticklish under his arms. I laughed as he squirmed about as I washed his sides, making sure his arm pits were nice and clean, going back several times to make him giggle away. I gave his chest a good wash, the soapy lather mixing through his hairs on his chest. I used my finger to write 'Jason' in the suds.

good story about tis guys fantasy.

thought were good story but little gross in parts of the book near end of the story
