When Anders's new neighbor, Finch, moves in, he soon finds the best way to deal with him is to go along with whatever Finch wants to do at the moment, regardless of how odd or repulsive it sounds; he's so persistent that arguing with him is futile. Soon everyone in the neighborhood is taking part in the effort to help Anders get more out of life. Anders reaches the point where he realizes his well-organized life is much too constrictive. It doesn't allow any surprise, joy, or companionship; things Anders never thought he wanted or needed.

Anders thinks he's content in his strict schedule. He does almost the same thing every day. Anders sees nothing wrong with his routine. His social skills are terrible; he has no friends, but that's by choice. People are too unpredictable. Any change makes him feel off balance and out of control. When Finch bursts into his house demanding sugar, without even introducing himself, understandably Anders feels as if he's been invaded. Finch epitomizes everything Anders dislikes. Finch is handsome, impulsive, spontaneous, friendly, and likable. Finch begins to drag Anders out of his “safe place” and into the “real' world”, by giving him new experiences. Even though Anders doesn't quite understand how he accomplishes it, he follows Finch, not wanting to admit he enjoys being with him. Even more, once he does whatever harebrained thing Finch comes up with, Anders often enjoys it.

Anders is still having an internal conflict between wanting his life to be how it was before and enjoying how it is now. When Finch states: "I'm going to remove you from this incessant rut you've gotten yourself stuck in, and I'm going to fix you.", Anders is furious and shuts the door in his face. Finch considers it for a few days, then decides that Anders has a point; everybody is weird in their own way and if Anders is happy in his “weirdness” then Finch has no right to try to change him. Finch decides to take a different approach. He no longer tries to change Anders ​but shows him how good life can be with some spontaneity in it. Just as Anders begins to be comfortable in his new life, Finch suddenly stops coming over. Even worse than disrupting his routine, he learns Finch has been seen around town with another man. Anders avoids personal involvement because of the pain it may cause, but he is involved with Finch. Anders tries to tell himself that he and Finch were just friends after all, but his emotional turmoil indicates their relationship has far more significance and Anders has no idea what to do.

I really liked this quirky “British-flavored” love story. Besides being a “no man is an island” kind of theme, it's full of lots of tongue-in-cheek humor which had me laughing out loud. Anders is adorably eccentric and most definitely OCD. Finch is over-the-top irresistible and lovingly “weird”. What an odd couple they seem; but they both have something the other needs, whether they are aware of it or not. If you like different love stories, with whacky characters, and good intentioned people, this story may appeal to you. Thanks, Bernadette, for the charming, witty story.

Anders and Finch have completely unrelated habits and interests. Will their opposite approaches to life be an asset, or will their differences turn out to be too big of a hurdle for them?

The pacing remained steady throughout the entire story. I was happy with how smoothly the scenes were written. There weren’t any instances of the plot moving too quickly or too slowly. Such stable pacing made it easy to stay focused on the storyline as I waited to see what would happen to the characters.

I would have liked to know more about the backstories of Anders and Finch. It was hard to emotionally connect to them because I knew so little about where they came from or why they approached life in such different ways. Having this information would have not only rounded out their personalities, it would have also helped to empathize with certain behavioral tics they both had that weren’t always easy to understand.

Not everyone has the same idea of what should and should not be considered fun. One of the things I enjoyed the most about this tale was how it explored what the characters did and did not consider to be a good use of their free time. The wife-carrying contest was particularly amusing. It’s not something I’d ever heard of before, but the narrator’s description of how it works made me smile. I can see how events like that would be worthwhile for some people.

The Neighbor is a good choice for anyone who is in the mood for something gentle and sweet.

The Neighbor is a story that you are either going to love or hate. I am not a fan either of the main characters in this story, and, therefore, it made it very difficult to enjoy the story.

Finch is too pushy and Anders is too anti-social. And that is saying something coming from a hermit such as myself. His constant negativity and complaining were just too much for me. Honestly, I never understood why Anders kept coming back, other than to be a jerk.

When the relationship finally happened, it was mostly an “okay well at least this is almost over” moment.

All that being said, the story itself is well written. It is an interesting perspective seeing the world through Ander’s eyes. There is an audience for this story. If you can embrace these main character’s and their character flaws, you will probably enjoy their love story.

About the Author
Susan Kenny Stevens is a nationally recognized consultant, author and lecturer on management, financial and organizational issues pertaining to philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. Her books and case studies are used nationally and internationally in university-based nonprofit management courses.

Dr. Stevens holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior; her doctoral research focussed on the entreprenieural behavior of nonprofit founders.

Such a helpful book to support the steps of growth. I was really feeling frustrated and once I began to digest the book, I came to understand that what I was experiencing was normal. The book provided a structure to navigate through the stages of building and running a non-profit. Additionally, after I got the book, we ordered it for my whole team and board.

Dr. Stevens' work provides an incredibly helpful framework within which to view an organization's growth and development. It also gives readers a wonderful set of conditions to ponder as they examine their progress. Helpful, not "preachy" - highly recommended.

This book is terrible.

In fact, it was so terrible I felt motivated to write a review for it. There are several things that you should be aware of before buying this book.

1. In the introduction, the authors state, "The only prerequisite we have found necessary is for the student to have had (fairly recently) a calculus course that includes some differential equations." This is a straight up lie. What the author actually meant is, "For our own convenience, we've removed every derivation and reasoning that involves math beyond the level of differential equations." For example, they briefly throw a surface integral early on and then it's never mentioned again. Why did they even bother? I come from a physics background, and I've seen my fair share of math. A lot of stuff is missing. The derivation of Fick's law that comes from vector calculus is omitted. For an infinite cable with current impulse at x=0, t=0, the derivation requires Fourier transforms. Hence, it was omitted. They didn't even MENTION that you should set the cable equation equal to I_0 δ(x), and they called it a current STEP. It's really sloppy, especially when they omit where they obtained their boundary conditions.

2. Also in the introduction, "A major problem we encountered when writing this book was in choosing the proper nomenclature... We tried where possible to use the practice that is common in physics and engineering..." This is another lie. The book is so confusing to read precisely because their choices of units are out of whack. The surface integral I mentioned earlier is ∫E.dA = 4πq. So the authors seriously thought standard units are Gaussian units? The authors also make some serious flaws in choosing their variables. For example, on page 62, they define I_m = I_0/4πa^2, where 4πa^2 is the surface area of a sphere, and I_0 is a current injection (charge/time). Hence, I_m now has the units of current density (current/area). WHY DID YOU PICK THE SAME VARIABLE TO REPRESENT TWO DIFFERENT THINGS? There are further problems with definitions. In the derivation of the cable equation, r_in and r_out are meant to have the units of resistance/length, and r_m are meant to have units of resistance*length. With these units in place, λ = sqrt(r_m/(r_in+r_out)) would have the correct unit of length, appropriate because exponentials be unitless functions. Then, later in the book I see these variables arbitrarily defined as R_in = πa^2 _in and R_m = 2πa r_m. Under this definition, the length constant would have units of sqrt(length). That makes absolutely no sense. Normally, one would include a constant as a scaling factor when making these unfounded definitions (unfounded because the authors never explained where these definitions came from).

3. A lot of the more complex steps in the derivations are annoying to read. Some areas of sloppiness include omitting variables (like r_out) that they say they could "just add back later." Why don't they just do the derivation with the extra variable, and then if they don't need it, throw it away? It makes it so much more confusing to read when they add back the extra term seemingly out of nowhere. Also, they make a lot of pointless replacement variables everywhere without actually showing an equation defining the variable (they just stick the replacement into the equation and explain it in words instead). They use * (usually used for complex conjugates) when they actually meant the value at t=0 or the value at x=0. They make pointless switches like μ to u and back. There are long stretches of unnecessary algebraic manipulation, because the author doesn't seem to have ever learned how to group together variables that always appear together. For example, in the appendix section about op amps, they take eight lines to finally figure out that V_out = -R_f/R_1 Vin, when it could have taken as few as three steps. In the Goldman-Hodkin-Katz derivation, they favor separation of variables over integrating factors when the latter takes far fewer steps and is easier to remember. They also never explain how they chose their limits of integration.

4. They waste a lot of space explaining unnecessary things like hyperbolic trig functions and voltage as a "driving force". One could argue that this is meant for the layman who doesn't have a physics background, but someone who doesn't understand voltage shouldn't be reading this book anyway, and they won't learn what a voltage is by reading the crappy explanation provided by this book.

Unfortunately, I can't say whether or not this book is bad because all of its competitors are worse, or because it's just bad. I haven't seen other textbooks, but seriously this book is terrible. I've been relying mostly on internet sources so far, but finding them is cumbersome, and then I have to write what I found into my book so I can actually read it. I paid so much for this book. I only have it because it's the recommended text and the professor doesn't teach at all. I can't imagine how the other biology majors without the math backgrounds are getting on in this course.

I'm giving it two stars. One for the fact that the content is there, despite how crappy it is, and the other having good print quality.

Dense and confusing

This book covers a lot of material. The quality varies from chapter to chapter. Figures are sprinkled here and there with very little explanation of what they mean. Additionally, there is not much consistency between figures. This book might be serve as a good companion to a course, but it's virtually useless for self study.
My background is engineering and neuroscience, but I still found the math to be poorly explained. If you're trying to learn about biophysics and cellular neurophysiology, pick another book. If you're unfortunate enough to have this book assigned to you for a class, make sure you attend the lectures.
The index is also terrible and virtually useless for anything that I've tried to look up. The only good thing about the book is that it references a lot of stuff, so you know where to look.
One star is for the breadth of topics covered and one is for the references. The Matisse drawing on the cover is also a nice touch.

Understand the biophysics of excitable cells

You don't really have to hold a degree in mathematics or physics to understand cellular biophysics quantitavely; at least not with this book.
Clearly written, concise, self-contained, begins with the very basic knowledge of ion transport through semi-permeable membranes, moves to electrical properties of membranes, and then to passive and active properties of neuronal membranes, all in a very didactic and intuitive approach.
Of special interest are the chapters on stochastic analysis and formulation of single channel function, and on the relationship between calcium dynamics and transmitter release.
This text is essential for students interested in pursuing graduate studies in electrophysiology, cellular neuroscience, and in computational neuroscience.

It's great to get this novel

It's great to get this novel, scientifically based approach to tasting wine, which isn't so much focused on 'deconstructing' the wine to perceive its various components/factors, but more on how we as human beings are equiped to perceive ('taste') wine in the first place and how our mind works to 'construct' the subjective taste impression out of our sensory impressions. The book is more about yourself in the relationship to wine, than it is about wine.

This is a great technical read regarding how we taste wine and why it tastes the way it does. This is not a book for the novice wine drinker who just wants to learn more about wine, but an excellent resource for serious drinkers and anyone working in the wine industry. The content here is more scientific than general and very extensively researched. Well written!

A very useful book. Playing like Eric us impossible for most ...

A very useful book. Playing like Eric us impossible for most of we nere mortals and the best instruction for him I ever saw or used was his own videos on ProPath, that just disappeared off line one day......after I had subscribed.
What was clear that he doesn't play, say, Cliffs of Dover like 100 per cent of tabs say. Not Trademark. This book perpetuates the myth on Cliffs. In the fourth bar he does not drop down to the seventh fret to play that D on the 3rd string. Nope. He plays it on the 12th fret of the G string and that cluster is then kept up at the octave frets.
That makes for a much faster pentatonic run down on the G string to give you the 7th position on the A string for your E pentonic before sliding down to the G on the bottom E. Do that and you will immediately get some pace and that's how Eric said he played it........so perhaps we shouldn't argue with that!
It's much more fun too. You climb down the neck as apposed to jump G from the 12 fret to the fifth without any nice flow.
So to play like Eric I use this book plus his signature licks and play it like it is, too. Do that and I found a more logical split on say Trademark also.
You can play it the way they tab it but it's so much harder. Blend all the books and you will have an easier time of it.
But this book is great the way it explains technique etc.
You perhaps can't have too much information on Eric's playing, but be selective in using all of it as gospel.
The man himself was incredibly informative in those videos and even he says he has to build up to full speed if he doesn't play the more challenging pieces regularly.
But a very useful series of books and I'm glad I bought a copy.

Really good quality. The pages take up nearly my whole screen and are very clear and crisp. The translations are good quality as well. Can't wait for the rest to be released, this is a really good series.

More beautiful manga!

In this part of the story we delve deeper into beautiful Roger's past, and the tragedies that seem to follow him through no fault of his own, as well as the result of Reno's confession. Nekota sensei's work is extraordinary and lovely and so romantic, with emotive developments ready to stab your heart with the feels. I love all of this author's creations, they are so gorgeous and exciting, and I wish more of them were available to purchase. This series should be read by any true yaoi fan.
