I was finding the Pharmacology text in Grad. school very confusing. This book defined M2,M3,Alpha and Beta agonists & antagonists in a clear, easy to comprehend manner. Good clear charts. Cartoons were pretty worthless but I like the book. Good to study from for tests.

A Real Helpful Overview

This 151 page review of pharmacology is absolutely a must for students and boards. I have seen recommendations for its use by MD's and I recommend it for pharmacy students, too. The book offers a fast clarification and logical organization of most classes of drugs for quick over view or reference. The book's material is in need of an update, and inclusion of more detail in some areas would improve the book even more. However, overall the book is a winner! I would give it 5 stars except for the minor need for improvement noted above.

Archaic but fascinating and possible

When there's nothing to eat but Each Other.

John Christopher writes some pretty gripping science fiction novels about alien invasions (The Tripod trilogy) catastrophic shifts in the earth's weather (The Long Winter) and terrifying tales of the savagery that humans revert to when civilization breaks down (A Wrinkle In The Skin)-- potent stuff indeed. His books share with JG BALLARD a fascination for post-apocalyptic settings but are really psychological character studies about how people change to fit their environments. This book is perhaps Christopher at his starkest and most frightening. A man simply tries to take his family safely out of London to his brother's farm in the North after a genetically engineered bio-weapon gets out of control and wipes out the world's food supply, causing anarchy and chaos to erupt all over the globe.It is interesting to note that on the page the protagonist's actions and "him or me" ethos seem to make much more sense than they do in Cornel Wilde's gonzo 1970 film adaptaion, where the main character comes off as much more trigger-happy and casually lethal & ruthless than in the novel; one might say its only a matter of degree once the civilized world has crumbled but that doesn't make it any more palatable. Sounds like a bad review, doesn't it? On the contrary, today almost all of John Christopher's nightmare scenarios seem only a few CNN headlines away...and thus more compelling than ever.

No Blade of Grass--Going Against the Grain

NBOG has always been one of my favorite apcoalypse books, combining a fast moving plot with well defined characters and thought-provoking questions.
Like most post-apocalyptic novels, No Blade of Grass ostensibly focuses on the effects of, in this case, an ecological holocaust, on the lives of a small band of survivors in post-apocalypse Britain. The tale turns on what these survivors must do to reach "safety" on a small farm in a protected valley far from urban centers. In this, the book differs quite dramatically from much of the rest of this genre. Rather than dwelling on the problems faced when the world's population is decimated, NBOG poses the much more interesting question: What happens when most of the food supply is destroyed while most of the population remains? Christopher's answers will provoke, even anger you. But, whatever your response, the situations he poses must be taken seriously.
This is a book well worth reading together with Earth Abides or Lucifer's Hammer. Though both books take the more conventional route of killing off 99% of the world's population (the first by disease the second by a meteor), they deal with similar questions regarding civilization yet come to different answers. For my money, while NBOG's answers are the most distasteful, they are also the most realistic.

Oklahoma was in the throes of the Great Depression when Preston George acquired a cheap Kodak folding camera and took his first photographs of steam locomotives. As depression gave way to world war, George kept taking pictures, now with a Graflex camera that could capture moving trains. In this first book devoted solely to George’s work, his black-and-white photographs constitute a striking visual documentary of steam-driven railroading in its brief but glorious heyday in the American Southwest. The pictures also form a remarkable artistic accomplishment in their own right.

Prominent among the magnificent action images collected here are the engines that were George’s passion—steam locomotives pulling long freights or strings of gleaming passenger cars through open country. But along with the fireworks of the heavier steam engines slogging through the mountains near the Arkansas border on the Kansas City Southern or climbing Raton Pass in New Mexico on the Santa Fe, George’s photographs also record humbler fare, such as the short trains of the Frisco and Katy piloted by ancient light steamers, and the final years of that state’s interurban lines.

Augustus J. Veenendaal Jr.’s brief history of railroads in the Sooner State puts these images into perspective, as does a reminiscence by George’s daughter Burnis on his life and his pursuit of railroad photography. With over 150 images and a wealth of historical and biographical information, this volume makes accessible to an audience beyond the most avid railfans the extent of Preston George's extraordinary achievement.

Augustus J. Veenendaal Jr. is retired as Senior Research Scholar at the Institute of Netherlands History in The Hague and the author of numerous works on U.S. and European railroad history, including Slow Train to Paradise: How Dutch Investment Helped Build American Railroads and American Railroads in the Nineteenth Century.

Bob L. Blackburn is Executive Director of the Oklahoma Historical Society, Oklahoma City.

Writer Burnis George Argo is the daughter of Preston George.

Great photos, good writing

Preston George's pictures of the 1940's and early 1950's steam era in Oklahoma are legendary. Now they are brought together in this book which displays them with good reproduction and a story with each photo. None of the photos are shrunk to being too small, instead are each given one page each. George covered all the major railroads in Oklahoma, except the MIssouri Pacific, and some of the short lines, with 90% of the photos being steam, the other 10% being 1st generation diesels. Most of his shots are of the "wedge" variety with many also having scenery in the shot. The pictures are dated and placed in their locations with only a couple saying they didn't know where or when it was taken. I even found one picture taken on the day I was born, which was neat. The only criticism I have is a couple of factual mistakes in the history of Okahoma railroading, like saying the Missouri Pacific had no presence in Oklahoma (it had a main line in the north-east, entering at Coffeyville, Kansas and exiting at Van Buren, Arkansas.) The prose was written by Augustus Veenendaal who is from Europe and could have been proofed for factual mistakes by someone who knows Oklahoma railroads.

The photos are wonderful. You should get this book if you are a steam locomotive fan no matter your location.

Finally, an entire book of Preston George photos!

This book of rare steam era photos taken across Oklahoma by Preston George should be a welcome addition to those with an interest in steam railroads. To those of us who grew up in Oklahoma after the demise of steam, but are familiar with many of the photo locations, it is a must-have. Each of the approximately 150 photos fills a page, along with informative captions. Most photos are steam locomotives, but there are also a few early diesels, interurban, and depots. A short illustrated history of Oklahoma railroads with maps and an afterward by Preston George's daughter detailing his life add interest. I have discovered a couple of errors in the captions concerning an engine number and incorrect engine type, but I still recommend this book highly.

A good book to add to your restoration library

I was looking for a Beetle version of the rust repairs shown in such good detail in the "How to Restore Volkswagen Bus (Enthusiast's Restoration Manual) by Mark Paxton".

This Beetle book does cover some of the same details but not nearly as much as I had hoped. I'll use the reconstruction techniques detailed in the VW Bus book coupled to the Beetle book.

Still, worth the study/read. I have about a dozen books for my Beetle and Bus and the books combined cover just about everything a person would like to know about a ground up restoration. (I love books.)

A very good review of body work

The book pulls no punches about how easy it isn't(!) to restore an old bug. But, it has lots of very good color pictures of real cars (not the pristine shots you get in shop manuals). And, the writer gives anecdotes about his experiences working on cars, what to look for in one, and when to walk away because it's likely hopeless. Sadly, his anecdotes are nowhere near as good as the Muir book. And, you really have to think twice because the entire book is written in British English (you'll be calling a wrench a "spanner" by the time you're through with it). Overall a very good purchase, even at the somewhat high price.

Brilliant introduction to heterodox and mainstream economic perspectives

This is the best introduction to the ideas of Veblen, Marx, Smith, Keynes and heterodox thinking in general available today. I use it as a required text in a first year college course which introduces students to Institionalism, Marxism and neoclassical economics. The book starts with an excellent summary of heterodox thinking and the problems which heterodox economists identify in the mainstream. The chapters on specific authors are exactly what is needed to show students the diverse analyses of the capitalist system that exist within the discipline. They are very wide-ranging but so clear and comprehensible that students get a deep understanding of the differences between schools of thought. I highly recommend this book for courses on economic perspectives and history of thought, as well as for mainstream courses in both micro and macro.

Excellent read - one of the best books I've ever read!

Every once in a while you come across a little gem of a book that will expand your mind with its insightful analysis. I sat down and over two 5 hour sittings I read this entire book through word-for-word which is pretty rare for me to do.
The book begins by explaining the problems of current neo-liberal economic modeling. The book goes on to tell you what Karl Marx REALLY said and how it had nothing to do with Stalin, China, or the former Soviet Union. You also get a good introduction to economists Veblen, Keynes, and Galbraith and how all of their ideas tie into the Swedish model of the economy that we see today.
Best of all, the book does not read like a laborous academic treatise; it's easy to read, moves briskly along, and gets straight to the point.

Economics Brought Down to Earth!

I am a college instructor who teaches a course on globalization. I use this book as a supplement to a world history text which begins in the 15th century. This text is very valuable for tracing the interaction of economic theories and world events. It begins with Adam Smith and goes up through Keynes. The text is non-mathematical, very easy to read and opens students up to theories besides neo-classical economics.There are excellent chapters on social class and on the social democracy of Sweden. It's great to have a chapter which shows the relativity of private capitalism.

As a 33 year survivor of Hodgkins Disease I purchased this book as a resource to help my physicians understand the late effects I might be experiencing and the best ways to treat those effects. It is a GREAT, very comprehensive aid, written more for health care professionals but there is enough in there for the lay person to make it worthwhile.

Judy McKay Tells It Like It Is, with a Big Smile

I have had the pleasure of working with Judy for almost a decade now, first as a consultant working in her test team at a (long defunct) dot-com era start-up, and more recently with her as an associate working with RBCS from time to time. Judy is always ready to tell the honest truth, and always in a friendly, happy way, and that's the way reading this book feels: Like a friend giving you honest advice, advice you really need and advice you're really happy to receive.

You can tell Judy's been there, done that, and gotten the silly launch T-shirt quite a few times. Here, she shares with you what she's learned about managing a test team in that process. Some of it is painful, but it needs to be said. Much of it is hopeful, positive, and downright funny, though. She'll inspire you to do your best work as a manager, even under tough circumstances.

Technical management is quite a challenge

This is a good book for those that have chosen to manage technical people. It provides the truth about how it really is as opposed to how it is theoretically supposed to be in any technical leadership role. With the ups and downs in the world of software quality and software development this book is a required tool for those in technical leadership roles that have maintain a world in whic both type of professionals must live. Selecting the right employees, promotions, layoffs, and the aftermath of it all is what a technical leader has to deal with as they rise and fall. A roller coaster ride does not halfway describe the life that one lives in carrying out the required responsibilities and duties in a high tech environment as a leader. Fortunately the author of this book, Judy McKay has over twenty years experience in software management and tells the truth about the profession so what she conveys will help anyone that will be, or has already been in technical management. I would strongly suggest to keep this book at your desk at all times, you will need it as you hold tight for the high tech roller coaster ride. This book is strongly recommended as a reference guide as you begin to or continue to blaze your trail.

I try not to read others review before writing mine.. But I found this review to hold very true..

"You can tell Judy's been there, done that, and gotten the silly launch T-shirt quite a few times. Here, she shares with you what she's learned about managing a test team in that process. Some of it is painful, but it needs to be said. Much of it is hopeful, positive, and downright funny, though. She'll inspire you to do your best work as a manager, even under tough circumstances"

I wish that we had more people like Judy involved in software development. She really inspired you to make the tough decision that will ensure project success. I found this book both educational and inspirational. A worthwhile read to anyone frustrated with problems in modern software development processes. I would recommend this to anyone consider a future in technical management or software testing. Yes as software engineers we do spend much of our time performing these roles.

"Manning and Anderson (both, Univ. of Vermont) have written a timely, pragmatic, and useful work, a must read for managers of all lands visited by tourists/outdoor enthusiasts, students in land management programs, and policy makers. The well-informed park user would also find it valuable. Part 1, divided into five chapters, provides a conceptual and methodological basis for the book. Chapter 1 is a concise conceptual framework. Following chapters survey human impacts on parks, and examine, evaluate, and apply management practices. Part 2 contains 20 succinct case study chapters that illustrate discrete management problems and remarkable success in the context of national parks. These include mitigation of trail use by millions of visitors and overuse of backcountry campsites in Acadia and on the Appalachian Trail; management of light, noise, and human waste problems Chaco, Muir Woods, and Mt. Whitney; successful handling of vegetation and habitat issues at the National Mall and at Katmai; and resolving visitor transportation and safety issues at Zion and Yosemite. The case studies are pithy, appropriate, and results-oriented. Chapter 26 in part 3 presents lessons learned through 36 management principles. Appendix A provides a toolbox of park problems and management solutions. Appendix B is available on a companion website. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries." (E. J.
