Among the best loved of modern psychoanalysts and perhaps most accessible of Britain's object relations school was Winnicott, a pediatrician turned psychoanalyst. The pieces in this collection (most previously unpublished and derived from talks to nonpsychiatrists) illustrate the scope of his concerns, the simplicity of his ideas about complex matters, and his inspired metaphorical linking of concepts. The essays range widelyfrom the healthy individual and family to a lovely piece on the "value of depression" and to some of his more basic concepts about the false self and the transitional object. The absence of jargon makes this work particularly inviting for laypersons. More informed readers may object to the lack of scholarly notes and to some of more "creative" intuitive leaps, but will soon be drawn in by Winnicott's many profound insights. Papers of a great humane thinker

These essays were collected and published posthumously, by Winnicott's widow, Clare, and colleagues. British pediatrician, humanitarian, and ground-breaking psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott died in 1971, having made a nearly immeasurable contribution to the fields of psychoanalysis and child psychology. In this volume, as with his other writings, his ideas are deep, reverential and respectful, and often somewhat complex, and at the same time, his presentation is utterly simple and straightforward. The reader is fully engaged, as a result of Winnicott's incredible knack for connecting with his audience.
The lively and interesting papers comprising this utterly accessible collection were written over a wide span of time - three decades or more. The selections are varied, and have been separated for readerly convenience into several sections: "Health and Illness," "The Family," and, finally, "Reflections on Society." Some were written in order to be presented at meetings of the medical and/or psychoanalytic community; others, to various civic, political, and other groups (The Progressive League, The Liberal Magazine, The Borstal Assistant Governors' Conference, etc.)
The collection is various and interesting for its content but also for - not in spite of - its grab-bag feel. Winnicott was comfortable with his listeners, and never afraid to speak simply, clearly, and with his trademark empathy intact. In fact, that empathy was at the core of his work. There's a great variety in it, too. "The Price of Disregarding Psychoanalytic Research," a talk given in 1965, details the importance of his philosophy. ("The link between poetic truth and scientific truth is surely in the person, in you and me.") Essays such as the 1963 "The Value of Depression" ("Always, depression implies ego strength...") and the 1967 "Delinquency as a Sign of Hope" ("the antisocial tendency is linked inherently with deprivation" ) show Winnicott at his very best. And the playful and kind 1969 "The Pill and the Moon" - written for an address to the Progressive League in the 1960's - is wonderful.
Some of these hopeful and kindhearted essays show their age, but in a welcome and lovely way, and therefore each is well worth reading and thinking about.

About the Author
Barry H. Kantowitz is Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Operational Engineering, and former Director of the Transportation Research Institute at the University of Michigan. Prior to that, he was Chief Scientist of the Human Factors Transportation Center of the Battelle Memorial Institute in Seattle. He received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Wisconsin in 1969. He has written and edited more than two dozen books. His research on human attention, mental workload, reaction time, human-machine interaction, and transportation human factors has been supported by the Office of Education, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, NHTSA, and FHWA.

Henry L. Roediger, III, is the James S. McDonnell University Professor of Psychology and Dean of Academic Planning in Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, where he has taught since 1996. He received a B.A. in psychology from Washington and Lee University and a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Yale University. He has taught at Rice University, Purdue University, and the University of Toronto. His research interests lie in cognitive psychology, particularly in human learning and memory. Dr. Roediger has published more than 250 articles and chapters and has authored or edited 10 other books, including RESEARCH METHODS IN PSYCHOLOGY, 9th Edition (Cengage, 2012).

David G. Elmes is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Washington and Lee University, where he taught for forty years. He earned his B.A. with high honors from the University of Virginia and completed the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in psychology there. Dr. Elmes was an adjunct professor at Hampden-Sydney College, a research associate for a year in the Human Performance Center of the University of Michigan, and a Visiting Fellow of University College at the University of Oxford. At Washington and Lee, he co-directed the Cognitive Science Program and chaired the Department of Psychology for ten years. Professor Elmes edited READINGS IN EXPERIMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY and DIRECTORY OF RESEARCH IN PSYCHOLOGY AT PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS, and is coauthor of RESEARCH METHODS IN PSYCHOLOGY (Cengage, 2012, with B. H. Kantowitz and H. L. Roediger III).

Very Detailed, Good for Serious Psychology Students

I appreciated how thorough this text was when learning experimental psychology. It is somewhat dense if you are looking for an engaging text for your undergraduate students, but it is great for those who are serious about learning, and plan to do psychology research.

Gritty and Hard-boiled for sure

These were two of the grittiest murder mysteries I've read in a long time. I had read Causey's other Armchair Fiction double, "Killer Take All," which was outstanding. So I looked forward to his "Baby Doll Murders" and it did not disappoint. The second novel, "Death Hitches a Ride" was really taut. Both stories had kind of a sleazy edge to them, but that helped, not hindered. I could almost smell the cigarette smoke.

A Nice Selection of Drawings

This is actually a nice selection of pen and ink drawings exhibiting a wide variety of styles. Historically it goes from Reginald Birch to Rockwell Kent. There are good images on every page, many full-page in size so they are useful to the budding pen and ink artist. Charles Dana Gibson's girls -- the gifted James Montgomery Flagg -- cartoons of Oscar F. Howard and Charles F. Peters -- the old West by Frederic Remington -- fantasy of John R. Neil -- many more riches to be discovered and enjoyed!

This by chance was found on the Amazon Dot Com Nation as I checked over someone who really liked this book...but was new to pen/ink and had a hard time accepting this book for trying to master the art of pen/ink drawing...I was lucky to review what I saw and ordered the book without hesitation...It's a great reference book and has much about the styles and illustrations during this time period (1881-1938). What a great find...!! Some wonderful history runs through each illustrated page...I'm still submerged in reviewing some of these pen and ink artists within these pages then surf the internet to find out more of said artist.
Great book! One I will treasure for many years.

This is a reprint of a Workshop Practice book

This is a reprint the Milling: A Complete Course (Workshop Practice) book under a different name. I wasn't able to find any differences between the two books (I have a copy of the original as well). The book itself isn't too bad, but I am getting rather fed up with this publisher (this is not the only book where they've done it...)

Here again, this is nothing more than a slick reprint of a previous work from the Workshop Practice Series, with no mention of said series. The preface isn;t even updated. But; if you do not have it (make sure) in your library, it is an excellant addition, full of great information.

I wanted this book to be great!

I wish I had read the other reviews before buying this. This book could have been so much better. I'm a complete beginner, and the book claims to be made for the beginner. In a way that's true as it is project based and starts off with making T nuts. But the problem is that there is very little actual instruction in this book. It's just this weird collection of strangely worded sentences (it's written in British English), and diagrams with no explanation of such basic things as: which stock to use for the project and how much? The second project in the book is making an angle plate. That would be great! Except that you read the whole chapter without even knowing what material you are supposed to use (other than that it is in cast iron) only to find at the very end that he recommends a university in UK where you can get a cast and says "these can be easily found in many places". After searching online, I couldn't find anywhere here in the US that carries angle plates that haven't already been milled....The other projects look like they would be really useful, but after reading my way through the first two, I don't have any confidence that I'll be able to do the other projects until I have learned more from some other source first.

Great value

I have dozens of books on Japanese, but I really like this one especially for the price. It fits a nice niche, and has a nice set of examples/ vocabulary and the kana / romaji examples really help you focus on the grammar.

Great introductory book

I really like this book. This is for you who know basic japanese but struggle with essential grammar and syntax. The example sentences are really good, and the concepts are well explained. Here is an example sentence from the book:

Ringo wa mottomo yasui desu.
リンゴはもっとも安いです
apples as-for cheap are

As you can see, besides the reading and translation, there is also the meaning of the word under each word. That way you don't have to look up in a dictionary when you encounter several unknown words in a sentence. The grammar is also explained in an easy way, lacking the academic hard-to-understand language of many grammar books. I'd say this is an essential book for beginners. Intermediate and advanced speakers may want to look elsewhere.

Arachic Teaching Method.

I have an old edition of this book that didn't have kanji and kana but is essentially the same. The original was published in 1963 and represents language teaching ideas from that era.

Modern language instruction emphasises immersion in the language with very little use of your native language. This book uses the old style of instruction that can be called translation style, teaching grammar in intricate detail using your native language (ie English). Having studied this book you may well understand Japanese grammar better than many Japanese, but you will not be able to use the language at all. You will need to study a more modern system.

Contrary to what is recommended in the book description I think it might be useful as foundation before you start a proper course.
