Poor

Even a dog can publish a book with Packt: the publisher operates a no-editors, no-graphic-designers, no-standards business model and publishes anything by anybody, hoping that something sticks. In the hot "data science / machine learning" segment, Packt met 2015 with a bang, churning out the god-awful "Learning Data Mining with R" by Makhabel and "R for Data Science" by Toomey. Then four more titles came out:

"Mastering Predictive Analytics with R" by Forte, $45
"Mastering Machine Learning with R" by Lesmeister, $40
"R Data Analysis Cookbook" by Viswanathan and Viswanathan, $40
"Machine Learning with R Cookbook" by Yu-Wei, $40

I checked them out and, long story short, "Mastering Machine Learning with R" is the stinker of the bunch. It is not as bad as Makhabel's or Toomey's, but, like those two, it is a low-quality, unoriginal book by an author with rudimentary, informal statistics/machine-learning education, regurgitating something he had read in a better book. You just don't have to settle for this - even sticking to Packt's catalog, the books by Forte and Lantz are two far superior options.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

Great Introduction to ML with R

Overall, I think the book was good and I enjoyed reading it, for a statistics book this is a praise. The following pros will seem lacking to the cons but believe me that it is because the book was overall good and any compliment hits nearly all chapters in the book. When I did see a con, I expanded on it to give full insight into the issue. As in any endeavor of this sort, it is always a challenge to find the right balance between theory and application.

Pros:
The book contains companion code. This means a student can save the code for the future, load it in when necessary, and alter the code to learn from it. In my honest opinion, this is the best option for me to study and learn a topic. Each chapter covers a different over-arching problem, which is gradually solved when new-techniques and strategies are introduced then implemented to solidify the knowledge with use. Allowing the reader to see what scenarios the technique surrounds and how it is run. The book covers a wide variety of topics, allowing a student to become a jack-of-all-trades, in the use of machine learning and advanced statistical techniques in R.

Cons:
I believe this book is suited well for someone with a mathematical and programming background. Without either, the book would seem challenging and daunting in some areas (i.e. Neural Networks). The book would not be impossible for someone without knowledge in R to read it, but it would be advised that the person knows passing knowledge of the software before they begin this book.

Lack of mathematical theory. In a few areas, the book shows how to use the topic to reach the end but does not include the deep mathematical background into how the calculation are run. It has a chance of creating a black-box scenario where someone knows how it works on the outside without a clue of how it is run on the inside. In my opinion, this isn’t always necessary knowing how to calculate acf, pacf, and eacf by hand is nice but doesn’t help when running acf(model). Side note: no reasonable person would calculate acf past five lag or pacf by hand.
Overview for all subjects. The way the book was made for ease in learning makes brings up a small problem. Some challenging data sets may exceed the scope of the books training material and could lead to the reader being ill prepared. An example of this problem would be if a time series problem contains innovative or additive outlier. This means the student may receive a model with the lowest AIC value, but the formula may not be the most optimized format. For this case, a student should know when a problem is showing intriguing characteristics and should being a research process into how to confront these problems, through other reading material, internet, or professional network.

Another great read. Curran delivers once more

I've been following Curran on and off for the last 5 or 6 years. It's true, there was a time where I wasn't reading any of his work because it all seemed the same: over-descriptive writing, gore in place of a a decent storyline, repeated plots and recycled violence. However, in more recent months, I've found myself returning to his works, and it seems that time off has been totally worth it. Curran has stepped up his game, writing quicker, more action-packed novellas in place of the plodding, sometimes boring novels of previous years. Now, in Grimweave, Curran once again returns to Vietnam, only, unlike Headhunter, this time, the creature he creates is far more scary and gruesome:

"The Creature was waiting for him. It was sitting there, clinging to the lip of the chasm like some great and impossible insect about the size of a pickup...or maybe two of them. It was some sort of thing Spiers had seen through the scope, only much, much larger. Its body was wide and low, cream-colored, roughly figure eight-shaped, like two plated discs joined together, each of which seemed to be formed of interlocking segments. Not smooth in the least, but chitinous and ridged, convoluted with bony furrows and narrow furrows like ribs, lots of knobs and hollows set between. And spines. A series of them rose from its dorsal plates and each of them looked long enough to skewer a man. Obscenely skeletal, the creature had at least ten legs, maybe as many as a dozen, each big around as a fence post and jointed like those of a crab. A sheer membrane of flesh webbed them together at the upper extremities. At each leg was a bulging pod that oozed nets of spreading, living webs. It looked like a living exoskeleton."

If there is any doubt that Curran is one of the most descriptive, highly visual authors in the field, that quote, directly from the book, should shut down any naysayers. That he has such a rich imagination doesn't surprise me, but the fact that he can translate that into words and sentences so rich in detail and vivid illustration is a skill that all authors want, but few can immolate. Even now, as I work on my own short stories and formulate ideas for others, it's Curran's strong talent that has been a huge inspiration for me. In a way, it's unfortunate that Curran still sneaks under the radar in literary circles, however, the fact that he seems to be grossly underrated isn't necessarily a bad thing. I can only imagine how much his work would suffer should he, somehow, sign a massive contract with Scribner or Harper.

Grimweave may not be quite as strong as Hive or Hive 2 (both of which really introduced me to the Cthulhu mythos and Lovecraft as a whole), but don't let that keep you from giving it a shot. It's actually a lot of fun and a quick, entertaining read.

The dialogue is horrible and it’s like the author watched Full Metal Jacket ...

Wow, I powered through this book because of all the positive reviews and figured the end would have a big payoff. Boy was that the wrong call! Where to begin?

All of the characters in the book are one-dimensional and I found myself rooting against them. The action described in the book is mediocre. The dialogue is horrible and it’s like the author watched Full Metal Jacket and Predator on side by side TVs, then tried to use the foul-mouthed rants to fill pages in between the story of those two movies merging together. And though the derogatory homophobic misogynist language is rampant, the author refrains from using ugly racial slurs which were common at the time (this is a period piece set during the Vietnam conflict). Go all in or stay out!

And then comes the adjectives. How many ways can we describe the heat and humidity of the jungle? Read every other page and find out…we get it…it’s hot and humid.

I’m pretty sure the author never re-read his work after his first draft because of the inconsistencies on every page. At some points the jungle is so still and silent, only to have the next paragraph talk about the incessant chirping of the bats overhead…huh? The group is well-disciplined veterans only a page later to be sniveling in fear, then back to “the mission comes first” trained killers they are…WTF? And my favorite, a certain character is killed in front of everyone, and two pages later the main character asks about him coming back from looking around with the others (Chapter 23). It’s called proof-reading.

And just to get nit-picky, does the author seriously not have any military friends that could at least give the story a once over? The ranks are wrong…Any Lance Corporal that ever called Master Gunnery Sergeant, “Gunny,” would wake up with a broken jaw knowing never to demote him again. “Gunny” is for a Gunnery Sergeant and “Master Guns” can be the affectionate term for a Master Gunnery Sergeant, which is a full two ranks higher than a Gunny. You also wouldn’t ever refer to the man as “NCO Carmody”…it’s Master Gunnery Sergeant Carmody (and he’s an SNCO for Staff Non-Commissioned Officer). Those are just irritating points. One infuriating thing is that no officer would act the way the Major acted, much less consider killing one of his men because it’s slowing the mission down (the worst thing any officer deals with is the loss of anyone in their command).

Without giving away any spoilers, the explanation at the end of the book was unoriginal and made little sense with the way events unfolded.

Overall, this is a horrible read and you’re better off watching atrocious movies on SyFy rather than devoting any time to this.

Grimweave sticks with you!

Are you ready to be terrified again? If you're a fan of Tim Curran's work like I am, then this book will not disappoint. It's full of the classic chilling drama that we have all come to expect from his work. The characters are all very cool, especially Spiers. Man goes through the stuff, and you just aren't sure how he will come out, or even if he will at all. I found the creatures to be particularly unnerving, mainly due to a certain fear that I have...lol. This book offered me everything I fully expected it to. I recommend this, not only to fan's of Tim Curran, but to fans of sci-fi/horror in the first place. You will not be sorry that you picked this up.

Beginning with an inverse premise--that having the right to say "no" and veto any agreement is actually the key to favorably concluding the various deals and transactions we face every day--Camp's procedure counters the common emotion-based urge to compromise ("a defeatist mind-set from the first handshake") with a series of less intuitive decision-oriented actions. "My system teaches you how to control what you can control in a negotiation," Camp writes. Claiming to be a negotiating coach and not a consultant, Camp has developed a system of negotiating that rejects the common concept of "win-win" and that urges people to get to an agreement as quickly as possible by any means, which in the author's view usually results in "win-lose." We learn that we cannot control the other party in the negotiations but can control and discipline our own actions and decisions. Concentrate not on winning but on the fundamentals of sound decision making. While his ideas are contrary to conventional negotiating wisdom, Camp counsels us to have a good, strong mission and purpose and to know the other party's real pain (why they are negotiating). Also, we learn to assess all the budgets involved, including our time and energy, money and emotional investment as well as our opponent's; to deal only with the real decision-maker; and to have a clear agenda for every contact. Original ideas and approach that make sense

Many books on this topic are painfully filled with obvious platitudes, regurgitating the same basic concept over and over with dozens of made-up stories. Start with No is refreshingly full of interesting not-so-obvious ideas I could personally relate to and stories seemed a bit more realistic.
As much as I liked most stories and examples I would have been happier with fewer of them. Especially examples on baseball are completely obscure to non-Americans. Overall a good book, recommended.

For anyone who is serious about their personal growth

Not only have I read this book and her latest one as well (Your Handwriting Can Change Your Life - March, 2000), I have studied under her since 1995. She is as giving, intuitive, passionate, and honest about her work as she comes across in her books.
Many studies have validated that handwriting is brain writing. Therefore, by making healthy handwriting changes, these changes will be displayed through one's personality. Vimala, however, is the only person I know who has actually developed healthy writing strokes that focuses on building character and making personal transformations.
I highly recommend this book and her new book.

There are two paths to enlightenment in classical chinese culture... martial arts, where the body movements cause transformational changes in the brain, and the path of the scholar, where calligraphic practice with the Confucian classics, when done correctly, causes the energy to flow out of the brush onto the paper. This also causes transformational changes in the brain. I could be a bit more esoteric, but the bottom line is, this is the first transformational methodology for western culture, similar to chinese principals, I've seen. I recommend doing this and it really will change your life.

In 1998, I attended a conference where Vimala Rodgers presented on the topic CHANGE YOUR HANDWRITING, CHANGE YOUR LIFE. I didn't attend, and bought the audiotape. I tossed the tape into my Walkman with mild curiosity.
My psychology background had taught me how subtly some muscle movements and neurological activity are connected. I knew how difficult it is to yell "Wow! I'm feeling great!" when I'm slumped over in a droopy posture. So, in this attitude of mild curiosity, I listened to Vimala while I was doing other things. Since I always enjoyed handwriting, I tried forming letters the way Vimala had described at her presentation, particularly the lower case t and d. I just worked them into my usual handwriting for the fun of it.
To my surprise, within a week or so, I found myself thinking things that had not occurred to me before, thoughts related to the topics addressed by these two letters. I noticed that I began swinging my arms during my daily walk without trying--something I'd tried repeatedly to do for increased aerobic effect, only to forget to make the effort as I walked. That a tiny handwriting change could account for this stuff didn't occur to me. I began to write in my journal to delve into these changes. I observed that these Vimala-style d's and t's were the only recent change I'd made. Curiouser and curiouser. . .
Then, I learned that Vimala was here on the East Coast on sabbatical; what do you know? She was staying about a 2 hour drive from my home. I sought her out, and it was then that I bought her book, CHANGE YOUR HANDWRITING, CHANGE YOUR LIFE. That so much potential could be packed into such a slim, graceful volume surprised me once again. I found its author to be quick to say that there's no panacea to be found in this work; however, it's a powerful tool--literally at our fingertips! I thought, "Can't hurt; might help."
Vimala made a couple of individualized suggestions for my handwriting practice in addition to the suggestions in the book, and I followed her well-written instructions. Well! The increasingly empowered/ing new thoughts continued and increased. I dreamed in color for the first time in my life. The ending of a recurring dead-end dream changed into an open-ended, encouraging one. Believe me, as I write this, I have to worry (a little) that the whole world will consider me a crackpot. I only tell you my experience.
No, there are no controlled, double-blind, placebo group studies to prove that Vimala's methods work. I know firsthand how hard it is to do rigorous research, and I know that "scientific" means "measurable". The results I experienced from changing my handwriting cannot be measured. I can't dispute that. However, to quote Dr. Irvin D. Yalom: "Generally, the accuracy of the measurement is directly proportional to the triviality of the variable." (The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, p.6). Check the literature for studies on anger, if you doubt this.
CHANGE YOUR HANDWRITING, CHANGE YOUR LIFE is like its author--to-the-point, no-nonsense, deeply human, funny, and gentle. Graphically, it is lovely. Directions for the exercises are clear and easy to follow. They require no specific equipment, and there are no dangerous side-effects. Vimala has done such a good job with her book that you don't need to meet with her to get the benefits of her work. Now that Vimala is back on the West Coast, I rely on the book when it's clear to me that my handwriting needs a "tune-up." (Or just to re-read the delightful account of how Vimala's handwriting work really started when she was just two-years-old.)
WARNING: Don't expect any changes from CHANGE YOUR HANDWRITING, CHANGE YOUR LIFE if all you plan to do is read; nothing will change from your simply reading this book. The power of the book's content is in doing the exercises. If you're willing to do the exercises as Vimala describes them, I'll bet you'll join me before long in saying, "It works for me."
