Review

"Alberto Cairo is widely acknowledged as journalism's preeminent data viz wiz. He is also journalism's preeminent data scholar. As newsrooms rush to embrace data journalism as a new tool—and toy—Cairo sets the standard for how data should be understood, analyzed, and presented. The Truthful Artis both a manifesto and a manual for how to use data to accurately, clearly, engagingly, imaginatively, beautifully, and reliably inform the public."

- Jeff Jarvis, professor at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and author ofGeeks Bearing Gifts: Imagining New Futures for News

"A feast for both the eyes and mind, Alberto Cairo'sThe Truthful Artdeftly explores the science—and-art—of data visualization. The book is a must-read for scientists, educators, journalists, and just about anyone who cares about how to communicate effectively in the information age."

- Michael E. Mann, Distinguished Professor, Penn State University and author ofThe Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars

“If I were smarter, had more patience with academia, and had more focus, I might turn out to be more like Alberto, closer to the brilliance that he applies to the nature of information architecture. His title explains a lot: truth represents a most fundamental of attitudes, in questions asked, answers given and journeys taken. This [book] is a must on your thoughtful shelf of understanding.”

— Richard Saul Wurman, founder of the TED Conference

“Alberto Cairo is a great educator and an engaging storyteller. InThe Truthful Arthe takes us on a rich, informed, and well-visualized journey that depicts the process by which one scrutinizes data and represents information. The book synthesizes a lot of knowledge and carefully explains how to create effective visualizations with a focus on statistical principles. The Truthful Artwill be incredibly useful to both practitioners and students, especially within the arts and humanities, such as those involved in data journalism and information design.”

— Isabel Meirelles, professor at OCAD University (Canada) and author ofDesign for Information

“As soon as I started immersing myself inThe Truthful Art,I was horrified (and somewhat ashamed) to realize how much I didn’t know about data visualization. I’ve spent most of my career pursuing a more illustrative way to present data, but Alberto Cairo’s clarifying prose superbly explained the finer points of data viz. Since Alberto warns us that “[data is] always noisy, dirty, and uncertain,” everyone in this business had better read his book to find out how to properly construct visualizations that not only tell the truth, but also allow us to interact meaningfully with them.”

— Nigel Holmes, founder of Explanation Graphics

“To communicate data clearly, you have to think about it clearly. The Truthful Artdives deep and provides an enlightened introduction to the ‘power tools’ of data experts: science, statistics, and visualization.”

— Fernanda Vigas and Martin Wattenberg, research scientists, Google

“The Truthful Artis essential reading for my visual communication students and for anyone (at any level) who cares about telling a story visually. Get this book, read it, act on it. If you’re looking for help to put your data visualization on the right track, this is it.”

—John Grimwade, assistant professor, School of Visual Communication, Ohio University

Very good, but some examples needed improvement
By Nick Cox
As I write there are 17 reviews here, all graded 5.

Is this book a perfect 5? Visualization (or the same rose by any
other names) is hot stuff with publishers. That is mostly good
news, but a downside is that several books are now appearing which
would have benefited from more checking and more cycles of
revision. This is one.

The positives can be concise, given the praise elsewhere. Alberto
Cairo's "The truthful art" is wide-ranging and generally very
clear, its author has a friendly, engaging style, and it contains
much excellent advice and exposition. Maps are covered as well as
statistical graphics. Many people will find it informative and
entertaining.

The rest of this review just mentions limitations that might be
telling for some.

Readership: The intended readership is in the first instance
journalists, actual or budding, a point missing from most reviews
to date. The book won't be quite so suitable for all other
groups. Scientists and social scientists with moderate or strong
quantitative skills in particular might spot some good ideas, but
they would be better advised to seek more technical accounts, such
as books by William S. Cleveland
(e.g.
http://www.amazon.com/Elements-Graphing-Data-William-Cleveland/dp/0963488414)
and Naomi Robbins
(http://www.amazon.com/Creating-Effective-Graphs-Naomi-Robbins/dp/0985911123).

Aim: Books on graphics usually span a range from appreciation
(isn't this graphic fascinating or provocative?) to admonition
(this is what you can and should do with your own data). Mixing
the two can be quite in order (Edward Tufte's books from
http://www.amazon.com/Visual-Display-Quantitative-Information/dp/0961392142
onwards do precisely that), but the mix here seems a mishmash of
two very different short books. Either way, there is no real
detail on how to do anything with software: although explicitly
not what the author wanted to offer, that lack may be a weakness
for some.

Jumble: The variety of examples here is admirable, but it conveys
also a jumbled impression. I found the first few chapters a little
long-winded. The last chapter seems a ragbag of bits and pieces
that didn't fit in elsewhere, including some examples of "data
art" which are unappealing as art and utterly uninformative about
the underlying data.

Examples: The examples are usually good, and several are
excellent, but too many should have been better. Repeated problems
are graphics that are too difficult to read when shrunk to the
page size used; graphics based on fake data; graphics that should
have been different except that the software used didn't allow it
(an explanation offered more than once); graphics mixing red and
green despite advice to consider color-blind people; and (for many
readers) graphics in languages other than English (Catalan,
German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Ukrainian).

Statistics: Some non-technical explanations of basic statistical
ideas are a strong feature. But although the account of
significance testing is about right as a reduction of one
all-too-common kind of textbook prescription, it does not match
best statistical practice, and it seems unlikely to make sense to
anyone new to the topic. Some other key points are missed or
slurred: the account of rank correlation omits the main idea that
they measure monotonic relationships rather than linear ones.
Unfortunately for some, if you need an introduction to statistics,
nothing really beats the most congenial introductory text you can
find. Cairo has some recommendations; I have another, Freedman,
Pisani and Purves
http://www.amazon.com/Statistics-4th-David-Freedman/dp/0393929728
But no treatment here is to all tastes.

Chatter: A now standard style for books like this is to pad the
text with personal anecdotes, fulsome mentions of your friends and
colleagues, and intermittent small apologies for even seeming the
slightest bit geeky or technical. That may be charming or
reassuring to many readers, but it won't be engaging to all.
Being technical need not imply being pompous or solemn, but I
wanted less chat and (even) more charts. Cutting down on the
chatter is an answer to the alarming closing jest "I've run out of
pages!" (p.375).

An Indispensable Sequel from a Thought Leader
By Jim
Buy this book. Actually, buy two because you'll likely find the first one you bought "borrowed" by a coworker never to be seen again.

Alberto's first book, The Functional Art: An introduction to information graphics and visualization (Voices That Matter), was a landmark book in information graphics. This sequel is just as important, and compliments the first book by focusing on visualizing data. Whether you are a journalist, scientist, businessperson, attorney, doctor, teacher or anyone else paid to communicate to others about data, this book will be invaluable to you.

I've already used this book as a reference on numerous occasions, both for data visualizations I'm producing as well as for helping others with their work. For example, we often need to visualize distributions of data. Too often in the past we've just shown averages or medians. Chapters 6 & 7 will change the way you picture and describe large data sets. His description and illustrations of strip and violin plots are clear, and replaced several of the clunky box & whisker plots we had been using.

There's good reason why Alberto is quickly becoming recognized as one of the preeminent thought leaders in visual communication. This book brings together many different fields of study like journalism, data science, and statistics in a way that a non-expert can easily consume. He takes the necessary time in each chapter to explain both the what and the why from the beginning and using wonderful examples. To illustrate, read pages 168 through 170. Afterwards, you'll not only know why averages can be so misleading, but have a memorable story that will help you remember why.

One downside of reading the Truthful Art is you'll become less-tolerant of bad data visualizations. For instance, you'll find yourself reacting viscerally when you're at work and receive a report with a poorly designed chart. Or maybe you're, i dunno, helping your seventh grader with his math homework and want to scream that the textbook has it all wrong (turns out this is not terribly productive, or um, so I've been told). But to offset your frustration, after sending off a few emails, you'll suddenly find yourself becoming one of the people your colleagues go to when they're designing data visualizations - and you'll have this handy dog-eared resource to use to help them make theirs better.

I've been lucky enough to have spent some time with Alberto professionally over the past few years, so I happen to know that he's not only a great teacher and writer, but also a genuinely good person. Use Amazon's "look inside" feature to read pages 1-6 and you'll get a sense for his personality as he describes interacting with his daughter. His good nature infuses the book with humor and makes it a sheer delight to read.

My only criticism is that he's taking a page from George R.R. Martin and making us wait until at least 2019 for the next book in the series.

Why, What and How of truthful visualizations
By X. Gregg
Refreshingly, this book delivers on the promise of its title. Alberto Cairo doesn't just talk *about* truthfulness in data visualizations, he explains *why* truth is a necessary goal, *what* it means to be truthful and *how* to prepare truthful visualizations. While his initial argument appeals to the importance of truth in journalism (his own field), he convincingly expands his audience to everyone with an "inner journalist" trying to communicate effectively. Cairo's background as both a teacher and as a practitioner is evident throughout the book. As a teacher, he preemptively explores questions typical readers will have. As a long-time practitioner, he conveys the trade-offs necessary in situations where no treatment is perfect.

Other data visualization books provide more concrete guidance on the best techniques for visualizing data, but The Truthful Art offers the best treatment I've seen on the why and what of truthfulness in data visualization. The first third of the book should be essential reading for everyone. It includes his most complete explanation of his five qualities of great visualization (truthful, functional, beautiful, insightful and enlightening).

A good chunk of the book is spent explaining basic statistical concepts and data handling, which may not appeal to as many readers. However, it's necessary to complete the argument laid out in the introduction that a good visualization starts with good data. Understanding and showing uncertainty is a big part of that.

The book is meaty at 370+ pages, yet ends a little abruptly as Cairo admits to have "run out of pages."

Disclosure: A graph I produced appears in the last section of the book, called "Practice." I haven't commented on that section's content.
