About the Author
Mohammad Iqbal, F. ASCE, received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the UET, Pakistan, M.S. (H. Hon.) from METU, Ankara, Turkey and the Doctor of Science degree from Washington University at St Louis. Further, he received an MBA from the University of Chicago, J.D. from the Northern Illinois University College of Law, DeKalb, Illinois and L.L.M. from the John Marshall law school in Chicago. Dr. Iqbal is a licensed PE and SE in several states across the nation. Dr. Iqbal has over 40 years of experience in design, construction and risk management. Dr. Iqbal serves on several ACI and ASCE technical committees. He has published numerous papers, has co-authored a book on parking structures and has written a chapter in the American Bar Association s book on the Design Professional and Construction Manager Law. ------- Ali A. Iqbal, P.E., M.ASCE received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from California State University - Sacramento. Many mistakes and typos throughout the book...

Although the book is useful in practicing the various disciplinary areas of civil engineering, I found numerous mistakes and typos throughout the book - in some cases the solutions were in fact incorrect, which made me lose my confidence in the author's competency. It appears that the book was not properly reviewed and was rushed to print. Furthermore, I didn't feel that the structural and hydraulics sections were as complicated as the questions in the actual exam leading me into a false sense of security. Lindburg has just published a new FE Civil book, so I would recommend this instead.
Bottom line: if you are publishing a book that is supposed to help student's pass an exam, you should at least ensure that the book is accurate with no mistakes or typos, and a true representation of the questions expected in the actual exam.

Not Ready for Primetime

UPDATE (8/4/2015): I recently grabbed this book because I needed to wedge something in a door to keep it open and I didn't want to risk slitting a block of scrap wood - which has more value then this book. This event reminded me to check on ppi's website to see if they finally got around to posting the errata; which they did. There is 30 corrections to date. Ouch!
Stay away from this book or at least wait until another edition is printed that addresses the numerous errors and typos. For some of the content that is actually correct, some of the solution explanations can lead to further confusion of the subject matter. Not all problems link solution formula to the NCEES ref book as advertised and in some cases, not helpful if it did. As an example, if a graph from the NCEES book is referenced, don't include a modified form of the graph in the solution and reverse the axises.
Second, I hate when problem/solution books present the solution and answer right after each question as this book does. There is NO convenience for the end user with this set up and only justifies a half-assed attempt at product delivery by the publisher. It is a real pain in the butt when trying to read a question without inadvertently seeing any part of the solution or answer. With every flip of a page, I should not have to act like there is a naked picture of my mom below each question.
I try to find a positive with every study manual or text I purchase and review. If I have to use at least one star to rate, I will try to come up with one positive. For this book, the only positive, unless you consider identifying errors as confidence boosting, is that the book is a great collection of FE Civil type questions. Even though there are plenty of errors, this book will give the reader a good idea of the type and difficulty of the questions that might appear on the FE exam.
In conclusion, I do not recommend this book when preparing for the FE Civil exam. The book does have a lot of FE Civil type questions but with all the errors and how the questions, answers and solutions are presented, this book is not worth the published price by a long shot. Without all the errors, typos, and some confusing solution presentations, this book would get 3-Stars. Additionally, if the questions, answers, and solutions were segregated, 4-stars would be awarded. For 5-stars, all previous recommendations would have be included with the following additions: include all references to the NCEES ref book that is used for the solutions, better illustrations, and for a book that costs over $100, not published to the quality of a cheap romance paperback.

I really wanted to like this exam preparation workbook. At times, the problems are worth going through and the book is good for some additional all-in-one practice but I'm afraid that is all the book is good for. It ALMOST seemed like a potentially good go-to practice book, but I cannot allow the sloppiness of the authors, publishers, and editors to get another undeserved good review. If I was the author of this book, I would feel very embarrassed about this product. I like to make scoring rosters to explain the reasoning behind my rating so that maybe it may help people see different qualities of this book they may be particularly looking for.
Convenience (6/10):
The one thing that struck me when I got this book was the size. It was thick, yet you could take it with you anywhere. Something good to take with you if you use public transportation to school or work. You can easily do problems on the train and not feel overwhelmed by the bulkiness of the book. For the most part, the book is organized well and is easy to navigate to another section. This is an all-in-one exam prep workbook so you're going to get all the flavors in the FE exam. However, you only get a taste. So, basically portable size, decent organization, and 'room-for-improvement' contents gives this book a whopping 6/10 for convenience.
Educational/Informative (3/10):
This, I believe is no fault of the authors being that it is a workbook and nothing else. Keep that in mind! They will not show you formulas, concepts, or how to apply them unless it applies to a specific solution to a question in the workbook. You can learn a few things from the solutions, but you will not learn anything up front. You dive into problems and if you don't know the concepts, well, too bad. Look elsewhere. Again, no fault to the authors but if you are looking for something to teach you concepts or how to apply formulas, this is not your book.
Quality (1/10):
Here is where the book falls short of its worth. As another reviewer stated, the topic "Transportation Engineering" is spelled "Transpiration Engineering" on the TOC and back of the book. If I saw this prior to buying the book, I would've did a 180 and looked elsewhere. That alone is embarrassing and should give any potential buyer a warning that says "STAY AWAY! I WAS THROWN TOGETHER LAST MINUTE!" The typos and errors don't end there either. You'll find problems where the solutions are worked out correctly and match exactly, let's say, answer 'D' but the solution will say the answer is 'A' when clearly it is not. So at this point, this book has zero credibility and I would advise anyone to not try to learn ANYTHING from this book and rather only use it for practice and speeding up your solving skills if you do still plan on purchasing it.
Topics Covered (4/10):
They do tend to spread over the range of topics specified for the Civil FE exam. But let me stress this again. They do not cover everything under those topics. Maybe half. Improvement here is highly suggested and I encourage anyone studying for the FE Civil exam to NOT rely solely on this book.
Author/Publisher Responsiveness (1/10):
The author/publisher of the book have a site where you can go to see if there has been any errors/typos reported and clarified, if any. Well, Whadduyaknow! No errors/fixes posted! I reported errors and still have yet to see them posted on this site. I even seen other reviewers claim they posted errors and nothing was posted. Great job, guys. Quality at its best! I noticed the authors do a nice little copy/paste: 'Hey, sorry you didn't like it. Here's a link to post errors we'll never fix. Good luck, we're still keeping your money though.' Stay classy Iqbal & Iqbal. I'll know who not buy from when I see your names on another book.
Price (1/10):
The current price on amazon.com for this book is $152.00. I don't recall paying that much for it when it came out (EDIT: Found the invoice. Was $100 back in January 2014), but allow me to let you in on a little secret. On the back of the book, there is a retail price printed on the bar code that clearly says $89.00. (maybe that's why they don't have a back cover image on the product page? That, plus the typos) You will be paying an additional $63 for..............what? convenience? quality? credibility? If you ask me, I don't think this book is even worth the price on the back. However, If you are desperate for an all-in-one workbook; by all means go and splurge. But if you want a quality review and study material for your FE exam, I suggest referring back to your textbooks if you didn't sell them back to amazon or your college. Don't sell them, you'll regret it! I'm so glad I didn't.
Overall (2.0): After tallying up the score, I came to around 2.5 for the rating, but to round up to 3 stars seemed a little too forgiving. So I decided to round down to 2.0/5.0. If you want a more clear & concise Practice/workbook I would suggest Lindeburg's FE Civil Practice Problems for the CBT exam (http://www.amazon.com/Civil-Practice-Problems-Michael-Lindeburg/dp/1591264405/ref=pd_sim_b_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1R9ZTV89W2JMW2Q97BNF). You will be sacrificing mobility, the number of problems, and pages of practice but at least it will be quality for almost the same price.
I would ONLY recommend this book if you: 1) Have the money to spend on this astoundingly expensive, poor quality workbook 2) Want something mobile and a ton of practice problems to scribble over 3) You have other resources to refer to if you don't know a concept or formula.
