Dubus has created a novel that is nearly perfectly suited to the audio format. Kathy Nicolo is a recovering addict whose husband has left her and who is making her way in the straight world with her own cleaning business. When her house in the California hills is mistakenly seized by the county for back taxes and sold at public auction, she finds herself living out of her car and on the brink of desperation. Once a wealthy and powerful man in Iran and a colonel in the army under the Shah's rule, Behrani is now a struggling immigrant who hopes that he can sell the house for a large profit, so that he can once again provide his family with a lifestyle like the one they enjoyed in Iran. Emotions take precedence over ethics, logic, love and the law as their paths collide in a surprising and tragic conclusion. The reading by the author and his wife is sublime. Through a careless bureaucratic error, Kathy Nicolo is evicted from her three-bedroom home in the California hills near San Francisco. Her marriage is over, her recovery from drug addiction is tenuous, and her income is almost nonexistent. Lester Burdon, the deputy sheriff who evicts her, also falls for her and vows to help her get the house back. Meanwhile, the house is sold at auction to Colonel Behrani, who hopes to resell it at enormous profit to help finance his return to his easy life in prerevolutionary Iran. The legal machinery grinds on slowly too slowly for the humans involved. The three main characters come from different cultures, religions, and social settings. The pleas, threats, arguments, and suggestions of each individual are incomprehensible to the others, escalating to a tragic and inevitable conclusion. Well produced, this book captures the hope, confusion, resolve, and uncertainty of all the characters. The frustration and anger are visceral, the tension intense. The actions of the players are made meaningful through the descriptions of their histories, cultures, and previous experiences. A Terrific Book

This is a terrific story. I'm perplexed by the marginal and even negative reviews. I enjoyed every page of this book. A reviewers said the key incident in the book is farfetched? Really? Have you ever tried to deal with local governments when it comes to property taxes?
If you like stories, you'll like this one. If you like really superior writing, you love this one.

A compelling but flawed tragdy

There are no heroes in The House of Sand and Fog, only flawed people, struggling to recover from devastating changes to their lives. Kathy Nicolo is a former addict trying to rebuild her life after her husband left. Massoud Amir Behrani is a former colonel in the Iranian military under the Shah, struggling to cope with life as a refugee immigrant who has lost his status, wealth and power. These two are cast into conflict through no doing of their own. There is no villain in this story, except perhaps the vague ‘county’ which in Kafkaesque fashion has omitted one letter from a street name, causing these two lives to be thrust into turmoil.
For much of the book, the story is compelling. The two main characters, though not especially likeable, evoke the reader’s sympathy. After all, they were trying to improve their lot, taking the right steps and making reasonable choices, until a fluke of fate intervenes. The situation the author has created places them into a crucible that tests their character and reflects the human condition.
But great tragedies drive the lead characters inexorably toward their doom. Given their human flaws and the circumstance, they have no way out. As this book moves toward its conclusion, I found myself wondering if these characters would really take the steps needed to fall further, or if the author was expediently taking some short cuts to complete the story.
Though this story was well written throughout and presented a great premise, I felt the story a bit contrived despite the strong start, and therefore found the tragedy less compelling.

Pride comes before the fall

Colonel Massoud Behrani fled Iran with his family after the fall of the Shah. All he wants in America is what he once had in his former life, respect and comfort. After struggling with several low paying jobs to ensure a proper marriage for his daughter Soraya, he is now looking to save enough money to put his fourteen year old son Esmail through college, and see the smile return to Nadi's face.
Kathy Nicolo Lazaro wakes up one lonely morning to policemen pounding on her door. They have arrived with a man from San Mateo County to evict her from her home, for failure to pay a business tax she never owed. Kathy's husband Nick recently left her, and Kathy is friendless. A recovering addict, Kathy is confused by the eviction and doesn't know where to turn.
Sheriff Lester Burdon is wallowing in a personal crisis of ennui when he arrives on Kathy's doorstep to evict her. Moved by her beauty and her vulnerability, he helps her move her belongings to a storage unit and get her checked into a motel.
These three very separate lives collide when the Behrani's purchase Kathy's house at auction, for one-fourth its value. Behrani begins to see and end to his slave wages and a chance to buy-and-sell real estate as an opportunity to rebuild his former life. Nadi's depression lifts.
Kathy is determined to return to the house her father left her. Anguishing over her circumstances and encouraged by Lester's attention, she begins to smoke and drink again. Lester leaves his family, and jeopardizes his lifestyle and career to be with Kathy.
'House Of Sand And Fog' is a beautifully written novel of personal dysfunction. Colonel Behrani cannot control his anger, Kathy cannot control her addiction, and Lester cannot control his impulses.
Each character's dysfunction will destroy them in the end, along with the one thing they all have in common: Greed. Whether the greed is for money, intimacy, or dependency, it is all selfish in nature.
Dubus paints with perfect clarity an alarming moment, a missed opportunity, a mistake made when all three parties have the chance to redeem themselves but allow the moment to slide by because they are too proud, too frightened, or too weak to make things right again.
An intimately told tale, 'House' is written in first-person chapters alternating between Behrani and Kathy, interspersed with third-person intermissions from Lester's POV. You will get to know all of them, their strengths and weaknesses, their faults, their loves and their loathings, their characters and lack of character.
Although the novel drags in some places, it is definitely worth a read. I also recommend watching the movie, especially if you like the book. Enjoy!
